SAT Math Level 2 January 2015 Score Discussion

I just started this discussion to post our math level 2 scores when they come out and to give suggestions to those of us who want to make our score better.

Mine 710…
Way lower than the expected :expressionless:
I dont know what happened!!!

800! Even though i got 4 to 6 wrong i guess! Cant be more happier! WHats your score?

I got a 800 and I skipped 1 (the one about heartbeats in 60 seconds) and missed 2 or 3 (the ones about a line and a plane intersecting and one other one). This test seems to be very generous! I can’t wait til the score report is released.

  1. I'm planning on taking the Physics and US History tests next. Did my best subject first. Feels great! Now if I knew what to do with my life.

770 and Im kinda bummed… Idk I should be more happy but I feel like I could have done way better

I got a 720 and I applied to all the top engineering schools (Stanford, MIT, umichigan, cornell, CMU, Princeton, Columbia). As someone who got an 800 on the SAT math section and currently takes AP Calc and AP Stat,
I was horrified when I found out this morning.

This was my first time taking the Math 2 subject test. I skipped around 4-5 questions… Odds are I got about 10 questions wrong…
It sucks knowing that I was only 2 or 3 questions away from scoring a 750.

Guys, just because there’s a large curve doesn’t mean a score below 800 is bad. Most of the people taking math level II have at least a 1950 composite SAT! The national average is a 1497. It’s silly that people are willing to retake a 790.

As long as you score above a 700, SAT subject tests will most likely not impact a college’s decision.

Patty29 is correct. In my opinion the most important aspect of a college app is the essays, so you won’t be denied from a school because of a 700 on a SAT subject test. Just keep pushing on and don’t get too bummed!

You have to look at the specific school admits. For Caltech for example 50% is at SAT 2 Math 2 800.

@seal16‌ While I see how that can be helpful, most of the people applying to Caltech have Math 2 scores in the upper 700s. An 800 on the math level 2 is probably common for people applying to Caltech.
So a high math II score isn’t going to really increase your odds of getting in.

I remember an MIT admissions officer’s post about how subject test scores are looked at. I remember a 700 being comparable to an 800. A person with a 700 subject test score had about as much academic success at MIT as a person with an 800.

I just check EA for Caltech this year stats. No one who got in posted an SAT Math 2 below 790.

@seal16 Really? I just checked the thread, I noticed A LOT of people got rejected with 800 SAT Math II, proving my earlier point, and someone with a 730 got in.

I can’t say all schools are just like MIT when they look at subject test scores, but the math 2 subject test is something people stress out way too much over. Many people thinking a score below an 800 will destroy their chances at any ivy league.

@Patty29‌ I did not say all with SAT2 at 800 got in, I said no one below 790 got in. See the difference? I am not trying to upset anyone. High SAT alone will not get anyone in, but they are a minimum requirement to be considered at a high caliber STEM schools.

@seal16 Yes and someone with a 730 math II got in.
There is also no such thing as a “minimum requirement” for test scores, although some upper tier schools will recommend SAT Subject test scores above a 650.

All I’m saying is that people are really overestimating what a high SAT score is, especially on subject tests where people think colleges will only look at your percentile on the test. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

Now, will a higher score increase your chances? Of course. But ultimately, a 700+ SAT subject test score will certainly not make or break a college’s decision.

We can have this discussion for a long time. Read common data set for the school you are trying to get into. This will give you an idea where you stand. And yes, 720 on Math 2 is an average score. Unless there are other hooks this will not help anyone application.

An SAT score is not the only predictor of admittance into a university, so admission data can be misleading.

A 720 on Math 2 may be an average (60ish percentile) score, but it’s an average score for already above average students.

There are many factors that play a part in the admissions decisions, so arguing about it won’t bring a logical conclusion. We don’t know what’s going on when the application is reviewed. Anyway, I can definitely see the point you’re both trying to make.

What do we usually see in full score report of the Maths 2 which will be released on 17? I got an 800 and i was quite surprised as i expected a 780 and 790 as i made a mistake of attempting all

800! I used Barron’s, and wow, I was very prepared and I accredit my success to that review book. I’m still in Pre-Calculus and Barron’s along with Khan Academy did a great job teaching me.
