Hey CCers,

I've been studying for the SAT masochistically this summer in a final attempt to boost my math score. I got a 680 on the December test but I'm shooting for 750+ in September. So far I've been studying math for 4 hours a day (taking a test every other day so about 3-4 tests a week). I've been studying from the Barron's 2400 book, but I feel that my score is still plateauing around a 680. Do you guys have any recommendations on how I can boost my score? I feel like I'm gonna need to start studying smarter, not just harder, so I was wondering if you guys knew about any time saving strategies or techniques that I can use to start breaking this plateau and making my way up into the 750-800 range. I feel that the time constraint is a big issue for me, because I start to slow down a lot on the last 2-3 problems. Time is not a constraint here, I'm willing to work for as long as it takes to reach my goal. Feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Cut out all of the problems that you miss and paste it into a notebook. Every now and then flip through to review your mistakes (originally travismarie’s idea, not mine).

Identify the types of problems that always trip you up and review the concepts. You may also want to keep a running list of all the “tricks” needed to solve problems. Also, never be too proud to start plugging in answers. If you need more help PM me and I’ll see what I can do.

You are exactly right! Sounds like you are studying hard, not smart. Read my article on the “the correct way to prepare for SAT math.” It’s posted on this forum several times.

Cheerio’s advice is very good - the same points are emphasized in the article, but you will get a more specific structure to implement what he is saying.

thanks for the advice, and interesting article DrSteve. I was wondering if you knew any good list of math strategies. Also, is it a good idea to take tests other than the from the BB? I’ve finished all the BB tests in the 2nd edition and have been using the Barron’s tests, which are quite disparaging given their difficulty. Is it worth getting the 3rd edition, or did they just recycle old tests? Also, do you know any other sources from where I can get College Board tests or any other legit tests for that matter. Thanks again for the help.

also I was wondering if it’s beneficial to be taking 3-4 tests a week, I don’t mind it I just want to be utilizing my time as effectively as possible to gain as many points as possible.
