SAT Math Question Help #9

This is in Collegeboard's "The Official SAT Study Guide" on pg. 338 #9

In the figure above, if two points S and T are to be placedon line L on opposite sides of point P so that 2SP=PT, whatwill be the value of ST/PT?

A) 2/1
B) 3/2
C) 2/3
D) 1/2
E) 1/3

(P.S: the answer is B. Can someone explain to me why?)

The figure is here:easy line question, In the figure above if two points S and T are t | Cramster.com

This problem is easier done when you draw points S and T on the line provided instead of trying to visualize it. After placing the points on opposite sides of point P, label PT as 2 and SP as 1.

ST = PT + SP = 2 + 1 = 3
PT = 2

Therefore, ST/PT = 3/2.

Realize that PT is x2 of SP. Put T on, say, the absolute right side of the line (at least up to where it shows in the picture). S, obviously, must be between that since it is half of T, but must be on the opposite side. Now, you can consider PT as any number (I used 1). When you’ve chosen one, you’ll know that SP is half of that (in my case, .5). Combine the two for the value of ST (1.5), and then divide that with the first number chosen (PT, or 1); you will get ST/PT (1.5/1 = 3/2) to be 3/2 when simplified or not.
