sat math question

help me with this question

geroge ran a golf tournament. the golfers played in pairs. the integers 1 through 16 were assigned to the 16 golfers in a random drawing. when everyone had gotten a number, george noticed that the sum of the number for each pair was a perfect square. if george had the number 1, what was his playing partner's number?

thanks

is this a grid in math???

Eight

I think you just try it.
I started with 16+9, then 15 pairs with either 1 or 10. If you pair it with one, you eventually end up with 7 and 8 paired, which doesn’t work. If you pair 15 with 10 and work on down, you will find 8 combos that add up to 25, 16 or 9

yeah the answer is eight, look up magic squares on google.
