SAT Math Section Prep?

I have been practicing the math sections of the SAT for well over a year, however my score has never gone over a 570. This is not a good enough score, as I am aiming for a 700+ in all 3 components of the SAT. Here are several questions I have about improving my score.

What classes does the math section cover?(algebra 1, geometry2,algebra2,etc)

What main topics from these classes are covered.

What are the main strategies for determining wrong answers even if I am not sure who to solve the problem?

Feel free to add any additional details if you feel they are necessary.

The SAT math section is pretty basic concepts of mostly algebra, although there are a few geometry/trig/algebra 2 questions but this is nothing to stress about. I think you understand the material but don’t understand the different strategies, I think you should look into some different strategies throughout this forum and/or from books.

As gman said, the concepts on the SAT are, for the most part, basic. I obviously don’t know much about the way you’ve been practicing, but I think you should concentrate on reviewing your practice tests very thoroughly if your scores seem to be stuck.

A good rule of thumb: spend as long reviewing a section as it took you to do it. Really take the time to understand the mistakes you made, and keep a list (yes, an actual list) of the kinds of questions you’re missing. Look at that list from time to time to try to identify patterns, and then seek techniques to help you with that kind of question.

The first step to improving your math score, in other words, is to go from saying “the math section is really hard for me” to saying “right triangle questions are really hard for me” or “function questions really give me a lot of trouble.”

Keep your chin up, and keep working hard. :)

PWN is right. You need to start to figure out what kind of questions you are getting wrong so that you can start to practice them specifically. You can start to do this in a lot of ways, including at the college board site. If you’re looking for a book that would help immediately, I would recommend 5 SAT Math Practice Tests. It’s the one that helped me figure out and then practice very specific types of questions. It helped me improve from the 500s into the 700s.

Here are a few suggestions:

(1) Start focusing primarily on Level 4 questions. Getting more of these right is going to push you over that 600 threshold. Don’t completely neglect Level 1, 2 and 3 questions, but Level 4 should be your primary focus.
(2) Make sure you’re applying effective SAT specific strategies. If you want a few free chapters of my SAT math strategy book feel free to pm me. If you haven’t been using the appropriate strategies effectively, then this might give a nice quick boost in your score.
(3) Try solving problems in several different ways and then think about which method you would actually use if you got this question on the actual test.

Best of luck!
