SAT Math tricks

What are some of of your personal tricks, elimination methods, or equations you guys use to solve common problems on the SAT?

For example,
(2 * speed 1 * speed 2)/(speed 1 + speed 2) for the total miles
or (speed 1 * speed 2)/(speed 1 + speed 2) for the miles in a single direction.

Stuff like that...

I never eliminate “obviously wrong answers.”
Why? Because this was proven wrong on the OCT SAT when the answer turned out to be a “obviously wrong” answer.

If it is a “find x”, I’ll plug in C. then work from there. Going to B if C was too large/ D if C was too small.
etc.

After I finish the test, I will redo all the questions with another method.
So if I plugged in the first time around, I will do it the algebraic way just to be sure it is correct.

For questions that ask for “in terms of X/Y/Z”, I just plug in random numbers, usually 4,5,6. Why those? Because sometimes there are special cases for 2 and 3. If they are talking about time, I’ll use 1, 60, or 30 depending on the situation.

That’s all I have right now. :]

Princeton review - when plugging in numbers, use the ZONEF technique when you can. Use numbers: Zero, Odd, Negative, Extreme (1,000,000), or Fractions. Used mostly in " if 2x-3 is divisible by 4, what must be true about x" questions.

Haha, CB screwed over alot of people with the “Joe Blogg” thing.

I’ve never been able to follow the Joe method.
I once tested out his method of elimination, then when I actually solved the problem by using arithmetic it turned out that I eliminated the right answer.

^that’s because they’re guessing.
one neat trick i always use is when 1 equation involves 1 variable, and no matter no complex(2.5^(x)=304959), as long as theres an X, u can make 1 side =0, and use the Solver function in ur TI83/84. this works for many , many problems~~ good to check too.

ps. this product is not recommended for calculator noobs! yeah u gotta be adept at it, punching #s etc. XD, also u have to know when to use parentheses~

Joe is an average-500 student. He gets all of the easy questions right, 1/2 of the medium questions right, and all of the hard questions wrong. This is because he falls for the “traps” that CB puts in to the question. If you get an answer for a hard question within maybe 10-20 seconds, it’s probably a trap.
