SAT official reading problem

I can hardly understand the logic behind it.

A long-standing theory about the migration of green turtles was ____ by an innovative marine biologist who graciously defused potential _____ by dedicating her work to the original researcher.

a. instigated, rancor
b. renounced, approval
c. displaced, attribution
d. enhanced, alteration
e. repudiated, acrimony

The answer here is e.
but I think the answer choices contradict with the sentence meaning.
Please explain for me!

Read it as an old theory was overturned by another scientist who avoided possible bad feelings by dedicating her work to the earlier scientist.

but why would she dedicate her work when she tries to repudiate the original theory?

to defuse potential acrimony, or not make it seem like she’s trying to be hostile…for the love of science

It is as if she was giving tribute to someone else who contributed to the field, perhaps in a time when the available technology did not enable her to track the migration as thoroughly as it can be done today (totally making that part up of course). It is simply a matter of being gracious. I think you are over-thinking this one question.

lol at first i thought it was c because i thought the “original researcher” was referring to some dude the marine biologist stole her innovative work from… and she didnt want the work to be attributed to her out of last minute honesty

hahaha
