I'm thinking of applying to the Ivies and other top-notch colleges but I haven't taken the SAT or ACT yet. I probably would feel more comfortable with the ACT, and I'm not thinking of taking the SAT if I do really well on the ACT. I know it doesn't matter which one you take, but will the admission officers prefer someone who scored well on both the SAT and ACT rather than just the ACT.

Yes, as Baelor said, the Ivy League colleges only offer money on the basis of financial need, not merit.

I'd always heard that the SAT was more popular on the coasts, while the ACT was more popular in the mid-West/central USA. Now the majority of colleges will accept both though.

As for scholarships, apparently there are some which require the SAT (e.g. National Merit) and there are some which require the ACT. I don't know the names of any off hand, other than the National Merit one (National Merit Scholarship Corporation - NMSP)
