I personally prefer the ACT b/c its shorter and you do sections in groups like math all at once, whereas the SAT the math sections are spread out.

I took SAT and got 1540 on ACT practice tests i got from 23(like 1590 on SAT) through 26(1760).I think ACT is easier especially english and science.Math is a big challenge for me(since im still taking geometry and never took trig. I have to guess on over 15 questions) and reading passages dont tell you that much info and 50% of them dont tell you lines like in SAT.

Good things about ACT and why I prefer it
1.Only 4 big sections
2.English has 4 answers not 5
3.No wrong question penalty like in SAT so you actually can guess.I remember i guessed on 6 maths questions 2 of them i got right which increased my score by 1 point

It's pretty difficult to predict who will do better on the SAT or ACT. Around here the school offers the PSAT in 10th grade. S1 had stellar scores on it, so he didn't bother trying the ACT. (Though as it turns out he might have gotten a better writing score if he had.) S2's PSAT were very good, but he might be a candidate for the ACT. We haven't decided for sure yet whether he should sign up. I want him to do a practice ACT before we sign up. The other nice thing about the ACT (to add to Future's list) is that many colleges will wave the SAT subject tests as long as you do the ACT with writing.

I think the SATs are more test-taking skills oriented, and the ACT gauges specific knowledge of specific subjects--the science parts, for example, so the ACTs can be easier to prep for if you think cramming a lot of info/facts is easier.

Personally I prefer the SATs, as I'm more of an English person and I enjoy taking advantage of the test taking skills instead of cramming on Science, math and all manner of subjects that they test in the ACT. But of course, lots of people prefer it to the SAT, so you should probably try practice tests and see for yourself=)

I actually think that the ACT's are more of the english-type test. Science does not require any prior knowledge, it's all graph/table interpretation.

I prefer the ACT over the SAT for many reasons. I felt that questions on the SAT were designed to confuse the test taker. The ACT asked straight forward questions, and the essay was at the end, which I preferred because I could concentrate on it with a clear mind, knowing that it is the last section. The science section isn't all that hyped up as it seems, you look at data, analyze the graphs, and answer the questions. No outside knowledge required, but recommended.

Having said that, I think you should definitely take the ACT. I was prepping for the SAT for a few months and got about a 1900 average on my practice tests. However, I decided at last minute to take the ACT and ended with a 32 - this was with minimum preparation. A 32 is about a 2100 on the SAT, so I found that there was definitely a boost.

My school did not even mentioned the ACT whatsoever during lectures, only SAT related topics, so don't let anything hold you back from taking.

I got a 31 on the Feb ACT and 1980 on the Oct SAT. I'm taking the SAT again next week, but if my score is similar to the 31 on the ACT which one should I concentrate on? Or should I study for both over the summer? The SAT definitely feels longer than the ACT, but I really felt like I scored a 25-27 after right after the ACT. Would colleges care if I sent in both scores?

I think the ACT is better, personally. It's better, because all the sections are together, unlike on the SAT, where it's split up. Also, the sections in the ACT are longer, time-wise, so you can really get into your groove. I scored a 25 on the ACT(not counting writing) in April of 07, and a 1170(math + verbal) on the SAT in December of 08. I'm taking the ACT agian in April, and hopefully I can pull it up a few points. My goal is about a 28.

I would say take both. I took the ACT and got a 31. For my SAT, I got a 2090. For me, it did not make a big difference, but some people score higher on ACT; others, the SAT.

I spent 2 months prepping for the SAT and got a 2080. I did one practice test the night before the Feb ACT and I got a 31. I personally prefer the ACT because I find it a lot easier vs. the SAT. Also, I personally feel I can do a lot better on the ACT if I actually prep, and I think I can't get higher than what I got on the SAT. I was actually pretty surprised with my score on the SAT, cause all the practice tests I took gave me scores of around 1950-2000. I just find the ACT more straightforward and I'm able to focus more than when compared to the SAT.

The almost endless sources of real SAT exams compared to only a few ACT exams is really pushing me towards the SAT. Also, I just hated the uneasiness I felt after I took the ACT.
