SAT or ACT?

I am 21 years old and have been out of school for many years now. I got my GED back in 2006 and passed with a great score.

Though it has been a long time since I have been in school I still find myself sharp and intelligent but a little out of practice. I am now trying to attend UA (University of Alabama) but before I can enroll I must pass the SAT or ACT test.

The question I have is, which one to take? From what I read I understand that the ACT is more curriculum based while the SAT is more critical thinking and problem solving based. Is this true? I don't have enough time or even the energy to study for and take both, so I would like opinions or any information on the matter that you might have.

Can anyone help me out? Did any of you take both? Which did you take and how was it? Please help me out. Thank you.

Yes your description is pretty accurate… I myself only took the SAT, I’ve never even looked at the format of the ACT, all I know about it is that it has hour long sections with tons of questions and there’s a Science section (which I hear isn’t science all)
I took the SAT only because I had already taken the PSAT twice and the format was a lot easier. I find it easier to focus if I’m doing 3 sections of Math split up rather than just doing one at once.

ACT math tests you through trigonometry, SAT math tests you through Algebra II… If you haven’t taken trig and aren’t all that good at math, it may be wiser to take the SAT, which weights 2/3 of your 2400 on non-technical stuff and tests you over less math.

If you’re studying for one or the other, I’ll imagine you’ll do pretty well. Most people perform similarly so unless you’re borderline on getting into UA, I imagine it won’t make a difference, ultimately.
