It upset me a lot but i found out that i still need to send standardized test scores to NYU as a transfer (I’m a freshman in college). I am applying to Stern and i wanted advice on what scores to send because they all suck.
SAT: 1820 (650 Math, 610 CR, 560 Writing)
3 AP Scores: Stats (3), Language (3), Macroeconomics (5)
Do you think i should mention anything in the Additional Information section of the common app saying how i am better than these scores?
Your scores are your scores. I’ve never understood what people mean when they ask if they should write to the schools and explain their low test scores by saying they don’t do well on tests. I think the schools can figure that out by looking at the scores. Any ideas what else they mean?
@hershey789 it really sucks having to resubmit scores - especially, since I’m not a very good test taker myself - but I guess we can’t do much about it since admissions officers don’t have much to work with >< I’m really not looking forward to resubmitting my past scores if I decide to transfer haha.
Personally, I would tell you to submit the SAT scores? Looking here (https://www.nyu.edu/admissions/undergraduate-admissions/fast-facts.html), the average SAT score for freshman is between 1900 and 2140. Your score isn’t too far from 1900? And I would argue that the SAT scores give a better picture of your skills? The AP Stats and AP Lang scores don’t really tell them much…
Besides, a 650/800 is better than a 3/5, in my opinion?
^ This link above shows the undergrad admission stats for just NYU Stern students. As you can see they look at only the critical reading and math scores (which is why the averages are out of 1600 instead of 2400). If your combined crit reading and math score is 100 points below 1400/1600, then I wouldn’t recommend sending them.
Since you are applying as a transfer your current GPA will probably count more than your old test scores. Don’t mention anything about being a bad test taker. You don’t want to draw their attention to that.
I’m not sure which scores to send. The SAT score is about the 83% and 2 of the AP scores are acceptable and one is excellent. I lean toward sending the AP scores because they also show high school rigor. Statistics & Macroeconomics are very difficult classes to begin with. Not easy tests.
