Okay, here is my case, SAT Critical reading 490 Math 780. Average: 96. I am going to take the SAT II (Math Level 2,Chemistry & Chinese) in Nov. I am planning to major in Chemical engineering. Now,I am very confused that whether I should take the SAT II ( Math level 1,Physics & biology) in Dec or take one more SAT in order to pull up my Critical reading score. I have been getting trouble with that for a while, but I am still not sure which one I should pick.Help, help, help, help~~~~~~~~

What you need to take depends on colleges to which you intend to apply. Many require or recommend SAT IIs; however, majority of colleges don’t use SAT IIs for admission. Morever, under no circunstances do you need six SAT IIs. Colleges that require them require two. Colleges that recommend them recommend two except Georgetown (which has no engineering undergrad) and Johns Hopkins recommend three.

If applying engineering, colleges that require SAT IIs often require a math and a science and some of those require the math to be math 2 and some require the science to be chemistry or physics (your choice which one).

Bottom line: unless you are applying to Johns Hokins, you need no more than two SAT IIs and you will cover all bases by taking the math 2 and either chemistry or physics. Then for majority of schools you need only SAT. Your SAT in CR is weak right now. You would be better served by taking it again in Dec rather than more SAT IIs.

Thank you for your nice post. I am going to apply to Cornell Univ, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, NYU-Poly, Drexel Univ, Buffalo Univ, Stony Brook & City College. After reading your post and knowing colleges dont use SAT II for admission, I will just take the SAT II Math level 2, Chemistry and Chinese in Nov and take one more SAT in Dec. I am also wondering if taking the SAT in Dec is too late, since the deadline is January 1st. Also, I am wondering if high scores on the SAT II will put me on a better position.

All the colleges you list take through the January SAT test for admission except RPI which takes through Dec. Cornell requires a math (either level) and science subject test for engineering. None of the others require subject tests. RPI recommends two (and recommends a math and science for engineering). Stoney Brook considers them if submitted. So for all of the foregoing high math and science subject test scores can help for engineering. The rest do not consider subject tests but no harm in sending. Note you will need Toefl if you are international. Also, for internationals whose native language is not English, a good Toefl can help alleviate somewhat a poor SAT CR.
