Hey guys, I recently took (hopefully) my last SAT. I think I did pretty well (studied for months, basically clear in every concept/technique). I was wondering what I should do to prepare for the ACTs. Is it the same concepts/technique with a slightly different variation, or a totally different beast? Any input from people who have taken both tests would be appreciated

Most of the content and strategies are the same, so you probably won’t need much additional prep. Might want to at least check out the science section though.

Thanks! I have not taken chemistry yet, will that be a problem?

It mostly tests things like reading/interpreting data, proper scientific procedures, etc. You don’t need much background in chem, physics, or bio.

For writing - absolutely! For reading it’s a little different.Overall people seem to find it a pretty solid base for ACT.

Peezus

Use the Real ACT red book to work through practice tests. The layout of the ACT is different. Science as MITer said has 2-3 real science questions. The rest of the science test involves research summaries, data analysis and conflicting view points.

Science is mostly interpreting graphs and a little bit of reading comprehension. The math is more straightforward and puts a premium on speed–and covers slightly more advanced topics. In general, the test rewards speed more than the SAT does, especially the reading comprehension, which gives WAY less time per question.

You won’t need to study for the English section it’s pretty similar across both tests. The Math and Reading tests are similar, but you will need to do a little bit of prep work before you take the ACT. The science section is like nothing on the SAT, but it’s not too difficult. It’s just a set of DBQ style questions meant to test your ability to interpret data. The essay is very similar across both tests, however the ACT essay prompts are less ambiguous than those on the SAT.

Thank you all so much! Great insight
