SAT Prep Course

Hello to everyone,
My daughter is planning to take SAT exam on June.
If anyone suggest which is the Best SAT prep course in New Jersey?
(or) recommend one-on-one tutor.
Please all your inputs are highly valuable.
I really appreciate your help on this.

The best SAT advice I know is by Xiggi: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/68210-xiggis-sat-prep-advice.html

Take a tour of the SAT forums on CC and you’ll see tons of ideas. You’ll probably find though that most students find self-prep (i.e. with the Xiggi method already mentioned) to be a better option than a course for motivated students. Classes, especially those by the big box prep companies, are over-rated and tend to focus on strategies rather than being sure kids actually know the content. Google “The Perfect Score Project” for a parent’s perspective on a number of prep programs. There’s great stuff on Debbie’s site, and I consider her recommendations reliable.

If self-prep isn’t enough, or a student doesn’t have the discipline for it, tutoring is a great option. Ask other parents in your neighborhood for recommendations or do a web search. Wyzant.com is a good place to look, too. Investigate several people before choosing! Many tutors work online (myself included, but there’s lots of us out there), so you don’t necessarily have to limit your search to your immediate area. Best of luck to you and your daughter. I know it’s overwhelming. Hang in there!

I’m a big believer in one on one tutoring. I think test prep classes are a huge waste of money. Ask friends around your town or call your high school guidance office. They usually know who the local tutors are (lots are retired teachers.)

I agree with the prior posters that a motivated student can do this on their own with a good test prep book. My D raised her act score from 30 to 34 doing the book with 11 review tests. She also had some sessions with a private tutor but she said much of what she learned she alreay knew from the books. S did the private tutor also, but really wasn’t motivated to study on his own and his test score actually went down a bit the second time he took the test.

D is now a teacher for one of the major test prep courses and much of her training was about how to get an unmotivated student to become motivated. Their guarantees are based on whether or not you do the homework and show up for class. So the test prep courses are mainly to handhold an unmotivated student.

On CC, the general consensus in that prep classes are not worth it, and on-on-one tutoring is only worth it for unmotivated students. Maybe my experience is a huge exception, but I think the prep course I took helped a lot and I am definitely not and unmotivated student. I could have studied on my own, but my parents wanted me to take a course, and in the end I think it was helpful.

The thing is, I used a smaller, regional prep class instead of one of the major national ones (Princeton Review, Kaplan, etc.). If you can find a similar smaller regional prep company in NJ, I think it is worth looking into. Yes, it was expensive, but not quite as much as the major companies, and I know the quality of the course was much better than PR because my brother did it and talked to me about his PR course.

I don’t think prep courses are a good option if funds are tight since they are so expensive and self-prep can be sufficient (don’t fall into the trap of thinking not taking a prep course will give your D a disadvantage). But, if funds are not much of an issue and you find a good prep course, I would look into it. I can’t help with specific suggestions because I am in CA, but best of luck on your search!

I would love to get that training as well so that I could apply it to my K.
