SAT Prep - Kaplan or Princeton Review?

Not sure I can ask this in the forum. Wondered if people had preferences....

I used both, but mostly Princeton Review. I went from about 1600 to 2270.

But the 1600 was from middle school so it’s hard to compare.

blue book is the best really. might want to post this in the sat forum though

do you mean the books or the course?

Kaplan CD.

i would recommend the princeton review and college board books. both are helpful, with a solid amount of info, but heres the main reason i recommend them. PR gives insight into how the test is made, which is very useful > they provide a lot of short cuts, of which i do not recomend all, but when used correctly are very helpful (eg-they say you should NEVER actually read passages - i think this is ridiculous, but they also highlight why, and much of their reasoning is correct). the best thing about cb is that they actually make the test so they provide previous SAT questions, rather than made up questions used in PR (although i like PR questions, b/c i found them a little more difficult). in using these materials i improved from 1780 (jan sophomore yr) to 2220 (nov sr yr)

Do you think the reveiw classes are worth the money? And if so is Kaplan or PR classes more useful?

my personal opinion is no, although maybe the classes work better for some people. i liked the books, b/c i could work at my own pace. i know people who have done both the PR book and class, and they said the teacher was basically just summarizing the book. plus, for the cost of one class, you can get numerous books.

I never took any classes but I’ve used the PR book and I also bought the game My sat coach (yes I know a game LOL) which is made with PR for my nintendo ds and I feel that their both really helpful but for me I liked the game better becuase they give u Quizes and vocab drill’s and its a more interactive than the book is so it keeps my attention and u also save lots of money using the book and game than paying for the classes which is great and it does help u alot with the vocab so I would definitely recommend it if u or a sibling have a nitendo ds.

p.s. the game was $30

Really awful. Do not use Princeton Review for your SAT/ACT prep. I took it at POB High school. The instructor came late to class, forgot materials and did not know the work. He was really not qualified to teach. He mispronounced vocabulary words and repeated that “you should skip a question if you are not sure”. The “guarantee” is
garbage. You can get your money back if you get less than 200 pts more on your test than on your initial practice. You get 200 points by just practicing at home. It is nothing. Also we were supposed to take 4 practice tests for the guarantee, but the teacher did the 4th one in class and did not submit it! So the guarantee was void! They offered me their online review, but you can get a better one free thru the POB Library website. Instead of paying $1400 for their crummy course, hire a great tutor for $100 a session and it will be better. That is what my parents had to do. Now I feel prepared. Do not use Princeton Review for the SAT!

I’ve only used PR’s Cracking the SAT but truthfully, I think that it isn’t really a book worthy of purchase. PR is very helpful for subject tests but it suxs for the reasoning tests. It isn’t all bad, and the best part is probably the Hit Parade, which is fairly accurate. Other than that, the Math section is ridiculously condescending, and doesn’t really give you a good mindset on the test day. The tips aren’t really helpful, and it tends to underestimate the difficulty of the reading passages. The writing section isn’t bad, but some questions might catch you off guard on the real SAT. The essay section isn’t helpful. Overall, I think that those who got a good score after using PR probably studied a lot more than just the book, and I don’t really see the point of purchasing PR as there are plenty of very helpful resources on CC. Hope that helps! :)
