Hi
I have a child in 11th grade and live in West Chester, PA (a suburb of Philadelphia) and wondering if you have any advice about SAT prep options in terms on private tutoring in the West Chester or King of Prussia, PA area. I checked out the websites of regulars like Kaplan and Princeton Review, and some local SAP Prep centers, etc. but seeking advice based on your child's experience. Which is the best out for one-on-one tutoring as I feel it will help my child.

We don’t live in PA but I hired a guy from Craigslist and my child’s SAT scores went up 300 points! He is a math major from a local, highly regarded college in our area currently teaching high school math. He was also incredibly reasonably priced.

I would suggest that if your child has already taken an SAT, you might want to interview some of the folks in the area advertising on sites like Craigslist. Take the SAT breakdown and quiz them specifically for how they would help your child in the particular areas where you would like his scores to improve. The problem with places like Kaplan is that often there is a rigid curriculum they may have to follow and you will end up wasting money to have your child tutored in things they don’t need as well as things that they do. The best thing is to find someone who is willing to work with you to identify specific types of skills your child needs to improve on, and then to target those specific skills.

We live in southern NJ. My son took Huntington Learning Center prep and had wonderful results. It is pricey, but lessons were individually tailored to him, right from the choice of instructors for his ability level. He took SAT I only once and was done!
