SAT Prep

Okay, so I'm a sophomore right now and I'm planning on taking the SAT in the coming fall, and then again next spring and possibly once more in the fall of my senior year. I don't really want to take prep classes over summer and I was wondering how I should go about studying?

Last year I took the PSAT I got mediocre scores...don't even remember. ~70 for Math, ~65 CR and like ~55 for writing (it looks like its just a memorization of grammar rules though....so I'm hoping it wouldn't be very difficult to bring up)

I also planning on reading a lot over summer if anyone has any recommendations

For closest-to-real practice tests and a basic review of writing, math, and reading, Collegeboard's Official SAT Study guide wins hands down. (Amazon.com: The Official SAT Study Guide: The College Board: Books)

For a good list of vocab to know, Sparknotes 10000
(<a href="http://img.sparknotes.com/content/testprep/pdf/sat.vocab.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://img.sparknotes.com/content/testprep/pdf/sat.vocab.pdf</a>)</p>

For basic strategies for how to tackle each section and practice problems, I would suggest either a Kaplan or Princeton Review book.

For a bit more in-depth look at strategies, I would personally suggest Barron's 2400 (Amazon.com: Barron's SAT 2400: Aiming for the Perfect Score 2008 (Barron's SAT 2400): Linda Carnevale, Roselyn Teukolsky: Books)

And for honing skills in any individual section, any of the Barron's books should work well, though the consensus is that they're probably harder than they need to be (which isn't really a bad thing).

Are you kidding? Why would you take it 3 times? Why not study more and wait?

I can't fathom why you would plan AHEAD to take it three times- that should be something you're trying to avoid. I think if you study a lot and take tons of practice tests, you shouldn't have to take it more than once or twice.

The best thing to study is the Collegeboard's Official SAT study guide (big blue book)

And possibly the stuff you learn in junior year will raise up your Math score so you might want to wait until later in the year to take it the first time. It depends on what subject you're taking though.

Hopefully, I just planned on it because its what everyone I know seems to be doing even if they did well the first time through. It would be better just to get through it twice...I know what I'll be doing for most of the summer anyways...Thanks for the link.
