SAT Proctor Incompetence

Two Saturdays ago, my daughter took the SAT and was the victim of an incompetent proctor. If you have horror stories about incompetent proctors I'd like to hear them. There is strength in numbers, and we may be able to get some rare justice from the College Board organization if we band together.

during the beginning of the subject tests, the proctor said we were not allowed to write in the test booklets. I was taking history so i was not really that annoyed. But for the people taking math and such were like ***? 5 minutes later she finally asked another teacher who confirmed you could write in the booklet.

So not really a horror story and it was her first time proctoring. But still, where else would you show work?

My only complaint was that my proctor would sometimes start a section in a late minute, so for example, she’d say start when the clock said 8:24 but 2 seconds later it turned to 8:25. Then she’d end the section the first second the clock turned to 8:49, so we were only given about 24 minutes for our 25 minute sections. Stupid digital clocks >.<

It isn’t much but every minute counts.

There will be no justice. All they can do is invalidate your scores or scold the proctor, neither of which will do you any good.

The second time I took the SAT, we got no breaks.

Buttt my scores improved by over 100 points so hey, maybe it was a good thing.

The first time I took it I was stuck there almost an hour after all the other rooms because my proctor decided to argue with a kid about pop tarts.

i also had an SAT where my proctor asked the class if we were fine with having no breaks. There was mostly seniors in the room just taking it for the first time to just take it basically and i didnt want to be the one and say i want breaks. I got a low score and feel this was the reason why. On my second SAT my score increased by almost 300 points (and it was a different, much better proctor!)

Lol, omgitsxmikaela. I ate poptarts at my first SAT. However, my proctor never argued with me. =)

Here are some stories…

1 SAT May 2011

Proctor gave us 20 minutes in a 25 minute section. A student pointed it out and we were only given 2 minutes because the proctor believed that her announcement took up the other 3 minutes.

2 SAT Subject Tests June 2011

Proctor ended the 1 hour timer at 55 minutes and only gave us 2 extra minutes.

Eh, this one’s about the ACT, but it could happen with the SAT.

When we were taking the ACT science section, there was this weird squawking noise that would not stop. They came and searched all of our bags and cellphones while we were still working. After a bit they told us to just stop. They singled out this kid and searched him, but he didn’t have anything. He was freaking out though (I felt so bad for him). They called in ‘backup’ who determined that the noise was coming from the ceiling. From outside they could see that two crows were fighting on the roof. So we got moved to another room and resumed the science section.

My proctor took up my ti84 calculator on a math section… And we’re allowed to use those. Needless to say, I was flustered and finally got my calculator back and didn’t have time to finish the section, making me miss two problems… The only two math problems I missed on the test. >:( couldve had that 800… We filed a complaint. The proctor said she thought I was on a reading section, not math. That’s my horror story. And now I’m stuck studying for the oct sat. I went into panic mode the rest of the test because of the incident and blanked out on CR :(

My proctor for June 2011 SAT was fun. During the CR and throughout Math she played Jazz and Blues and sung. Unintentional but I thought it was kind of funny except when I caught myself erasing my answers too aggressive and ripped my Answer sheet in half.

I don’t have one of proctor incompetence, but student incompetence. At the June 2011 SAT, we didn’t have enough test booklets to start. So the proctor told a kid to go get some more booklets. The kids was gone for 10 minutes, and then returned saying that he forgot what he was supposed to ask for. We were already 15 minutes behind schedule. Then the test supervisor came upstairs with the kid because he thought the kid was trying to steal them. That took another 20 minutes to sort out. We ended up starting 45 minutes after everyone else.
