SAT/PSAT disparity

On the practice SATs I was taking, I would usually score between 2150-2230, but now I am scoring only about 200-210 on the practice PSATs I am taking (I have about 5). My highest so far has been a 209. Is this ok? Will i do better when the actual test comes around on wednesday?

P.S. I'm a sophomore so it doesn't really count.
P.P.S. My math score fluctuates a lot. I've scored 80s/800s on some but then 70s/730s on others...is that normal?

This is actually pretty normal because the curve for the PSAT is much harsher than that of the SAT. Obviously, the PSAT is just a preliminary test, and, since you’re a sophomore, there’s even more reason not to worry about it! Just try to be careful with your answers and be sure to look over your work before finishing a section to minimize wrong answers (since every answer counts for more points on the PSAT).

It’s normal to have a math score that fluctuates since the math curve is so harsh (most people ace it and therefore -1 and -2 will USUALLY get you a 770 and 740, respectively). Since the PSAT has less questions, missing some accidentally due to misreading the question or misbubbling can be detrimental to your score. I would recommend that you pace yourself and definitely check your answers if you have time left.

SirEvil, you’re filling up the SAT prep forum. Beware of CC addiction :P

This is normal. The difference between an 800 and a 730 is just a few questions, so it’s nothing to get too worried about.

I agree with this advice

Alrighty, thanks guys!

Does anyone think studying silverturtle’s grammar guide today can increase my score from a 67ish to a 75+?

there is no 75+ range. One wrong is 77. Two wrong is 73. Three or four wrong is 67ish.

Can his guide eliminate mistakes? If you are getting 3 wrong, probably not at that point, unless you study it like crazy and learn it like an english professor would.

haha so it’s going to be based on luck and my attentiveness huh? and yeah i realized that. It sucks that writing doesn’t have a -1 is 80 curve like CR though… I guess I’ll aim for a 77 then :D

This isn’t always necessarily true. Depending on the difficulty of the test, this could change

If you study it thoroughly, and understand all the concepts presented in the guide, you should be fine. But I have to say, silverturtle’s writing guide can get pretty intense and hard to follow due to a lot of different grammar rules and words that most kids haven’t been exposed to.

^I sometimes feel like a lack of attention during PSAT practice tests may have contributed to lower scores for writing, so hopefully ill do better tommoro :D
