Sat/psat?

Hello, I'm in grade 10 and wondering about the SATs/PSATs. I know that I have to take the SATs for many Univeristies in the US, where I am hoping to go, but when? When should I take them/start studying for them. And should I take the PSATs or not? I would ask my guidance counsellors, but they don't know anything about it :/
Thanks.

I took it once in the December of 11th grade. I’d started studying for that in the summer. I made a decent score, but not something I wanted. So I studied for it since then, and took a class…then took it in June before 12th grade. After that, I concentrated on taking the subject tests. These, by the way, you should study for - a lot of the things on these tests are not covered in Ontario’s curriculum.

Thanks  I was starting to worry I was a little behind. I know what you mean about Ontario’s curriculum. My school doesn’t even have AP classes :(

Not to worry. I used to go to an Alberta highschool…so you’re not alone!

Students usually prep for the SAT months before they take it.

USUALLY, the first time students take the SAT is october of grade 11 to get a good feel for it, although you could do it earlier (as in June of Grade 10…maybe even January of Grade 10!).

I don’t recommend doing the test for the sake of “just trying”, since most colleges want to see all of your attempts! So if youre a 10th grade student right now, I would recommend :
-seriously studying for the SAT for the next 6-8 weeks (most of the “studying” is practicing the questions! Practice tests are VERY IMPORTANT! Buy the Official SAT guidebook)
-If you feel confident, register early for the February exam. If I were you, I would study for the SAT from now and take it in June for the first time. My second try would be sometime in October of Grade 11, (If Im not happy with the score)third try in June of Grade 11, (If Im not happy) last try in October of Grade 12… personally, I wouldn’t take it more than 3 times… I would also aim for a total combined score of 2200+

keep in mind that the SAT is a silly test…the math they test is grade 7 to grade 9 math…so it’s mostly your attitude that will determine how successful you will be on this test!

I don’t know about your school, but functions and all that stuff was not covered until 11th grade for me.

I took my SAT I for the first time Nov of my senior year…took my subject tests may and june of junior year - had to self study a lot of stuff.

You should plan according to your own time and level of preparation. I only planned to take everything once so I leaved it till the last possilble time…but even after Nov of senior year I still had Dec and Jan to retake anything horrible.
