Part of the following sentence is underlined; beneath the sentence are five ways of phrasing the underlined material. Select the option that produces the best sentence. If you think the original phrasing produces a better sentence than any of the alternatives, select choice A.

In addition to Hindus and Buddhists, the religion of Jainism developed within the ancient civilization of India.

(A) In addition to Hindus and Buddhists,
(B) As with Hinduism and Buddhism,
(C) Hinduism, Buddhism, and also
(D) Along with Hinduism and Buddhism,
(E) Hindus and Buddhists, in addition to

Ok, I know what the answer is, so only post the answer if you're willing to give an explanation (and not the one that collegeboard gives you - I didn't quite see what they were saying).

Notice how the second half of the sentence says the religion of Jainism. Hindus and Buddhists are members of religions. That doesn't match Jainism which is a religion. So, your looking at choice D because it says Along with Hinduism and Buddhism. The other choices are not as precise or mention members of the religion rather than the religion itself.

The grammar end is just not correct. Do you see how much better along sounds? Most comparisons need two "as." He was as tall as a tree. There's an example. The as in the sentence provided by CB is comparing two things to another, while it should normally compare one thing to another like the sentence i showed you. Ehh it's hard to explain for me at least.

I suppose its probably because I learned that using "as" the way it was presented is perfectly fine. Its just something I'll have to consciously note from now on I guess.

Oh and next time please read the entire first post. I specifically asked for answers ONLY if they came with explanations, and unless you can give a better explanation than someone above, this thread's pretty much done with.

you people are such *****es, all he wants is an answer, sheesh.

Anyway.

In addition to Hindus and Buddhists, the religion of Jainism developed within the ancient civilization of India.

(A) In addition to Hindus and Buddhists,
(B) As with Hinduism and Buddhism,
(C) Hinduism, Buddhism, and also
(D) Along with Hinduism and Buddhism,
(E) Hindus and Buddhists, in addition to

(A) is wrong because you're talking abour jainISM and not jainISTS.
(B) is wrong because for that to be correct, it'd need to say "As DID Hinduism and Buddhism".
(C) is wrong because the "the religion of" part stays there, and it's not parallel. You'd need to say "The religion of Hinduism, the religion of Buddhism.."
(E) is wrong for the same reason (A) is wrong.
