SAT question

How beneficial is it really going to be for me to sign up for both the Oct and Nov SAT? I’m already signed up for Nov and am studying my weak areas in math. If I don’t make the 1400 score on the first try, am I really that much more likely to make it the second time around just a few weeks later? I took the SAT in 2008 and scored 1320 (Math and Reading). I need 80 points to receive the Presidential.

Just trying to decide whether I should take the plunge and sign up for both tests.

My two cents, I would skip the Oct SAT test and instead take the ACT test. Some do better on the ACT than the SAT. Even my NMF daughter did better on the ACT than the SAT. With 3 sections that use reading skills and only one that uses math skills, I think you may find it a better test for you.

Go for it. It can’t hurt and might help and save you tens of thousands of dollars. The worst thing is your out an extra $40 and a few hours of your time.
My daughter took the SAT in OCT and received a 2100. The next week she took the PSAT. In that week between she studied the areas she felt weak on. She scored a 228.

I would say take both the Oct and Nov SAT…and the Oct ACT. Yes, it does happen that a person does better a few weeks later…because the stories in CR are different, the math questions are different, the vocab is different.

There have been people who’ve missed the Presidential by 10 pts on the SAT…give yourself as many chances…both SAT exams and the ACT.

And…another reason…what if you don’t feel well on the Nov SAT? Then you’ll have lost your only chance.

Do I need the writing section on the ACT?

^^^ That’s an interesting question. Most schools will tell you that while they are NOT actually using the “results” of the writing section of the ACT to make the enrollment decision, that they DO want students to take the ACT with Writing. Better to just take the exam with the Writing for use (or not) at either UA or any of the other schools that you may be applying to.

I hadn’t thought of that! Good point!

And UA does require the written part, but it is not used for admission:

Yeah, I guess that’s what bothers me…if I don’t make my goal on the Nov SAT, I’ve missed my chance until next year!!

If you had a 1320 in 2008, I’d be surprised if you aren’t much closer to your goal now than you realize  What have you been scoring on the practice tests?

^^^^^ I actually took a practice test this morning, and scored a 1400 exactly…I’ve only been studying about three weeks, and I scored 1330 on the practice test I took last month, so I know I’m improving! With another month or two of study, I hope to have that 1400 well in hand!!

But I am very nervous about missing the goal by just a few points, so I know I need to schedule a second test. I’m just not sure whether to try the ACT or do another SAT.

Does anyone know where I can get a practice test for the ACT online?

Don’t know if you’re familiar with Khan Academy (they’ve been getting a lot of press lately, especially since the Gates Foundation talked them up) but they have a series of videos on SAT Math which might help you: [Khan Academy](Khan Academy)

RobD, I’ve been watching every single one of the Kahn Academy SAT videos! They are so helpful. On the Math problems I missed, I am going back to watch the demonstrations on those.

Take both Oct tests…the SAT and ACT…they’re not on the same weekend.

You can download the handout students can get at the high schools. It has a practice test. But it is 80 pages…

http://www.act.org/aap/pdf/preparing.pdf

You are doing exactly the right thing by gaining an understanding of the ones you missed! Good luck :)

I’m going to sign up for the Oct SAT, but I’ve decided to skip the ACT. I’ve taken several practice ACT tests, and the math section is MUCH harder (for me) than the SAT. I did not do as well. However, on the SAT I am scoring very near my goal, so I think that is much more attainable for me.
