For anyone knowledgeable about Caltech admissions: son, currently a junior, just took SAT I for the first time and scored 2280 (780M, 740CR, 760W). Is there any reason to retake, or are these scores "good enough" for Caltech? We know, of course, that the SAT I is just one factor amongst many that figure into admissions decisions. Thanks!

These scores are definitely good enough. At this point, other things will make the difference. Plus, it always makes me happy when I read an application and a student stopped the first time, confident in scores that weren't quite 100% perfect. It demonstrates a certain ability to move on to other important things in life ;-)

Thanks, Ben.

How about a 2110?
(770M, 700CR, 640W)

We basically ignore the writing... those scores are only a little below the scores of the average admit, so I think retaking would probably be a waste unless you have too much time on your hands. If you're also applying to Harvard or Princeton, it might be worth trying for a slightly higher CR score (might!) but they pay less attention to scores anyway.

So I think these are okay :)

I just found out that Caltech seems to be requiring the new SAT or ACT. I took the old SAT and SAT-II Writing before the switch was made... will those scores be okay?

This year, yes. Old SAT + 2 SAT II's (math IIc and a science) is okay.
