I realize at the elite o/o/s public an o/o/s applicant must be at the high end of the SAT band (25-75) but how about the other schools- does anyone have an opinion or some inside information. Here is an example- UNC-CH vs NC State.
Chapel Hill caps o/o/s at 18% so you need to be at the top and the school is still a reach for an o/o/s applicant. NC State only has an enrollment of 8% o/o/s. I do not know if they cap o/o/s enrollment- does anyone? So for NC State would an out of state applicant consider the school a match if they fall within the SAT 25-75 range or would you also have to be nearer the 75% end?

The same issue can be found at other schools- UVA and W&M vs. VA TECH, James Madison, Mary Washington or George Mason. Maryland vs UMBC.

What do you think?

My hand is raised.

I can talk a little about UNC/NCState.

UNC is harder to get into because WAY more people apply from out of state. They can only accept 18% from OOS, so they have to be more selective with OOS. Pool of applicants > number they are capped at, therefore harder to get into.

NCState on the other hand, does not get as many OOS applicants. When my oldest was applying, the counselor we spoke to said they do not even get as many OOS applicants as the cap allows. Therefore, the requirements for in state and out of state at NCState are basically the same.

Thank you doubleplay. I think that may be the answer at all the non-elite public universities.
I am also starting to notice that unlike most schools discussed here if you are within the SAT range and have a strong GPA a school that accepts > 50% is a match. So schools like NC State the low end is mid 500's get that score and have a GPA around 3.75 and you can include the school in the match category =50/50.

I am basing that on looking at various Naviance graphs- 6 total. I look at the low end SAT range the school posts and look at a high end GPA and the vast majority of the Naviance graphs show acceptances.

Can't speak to other schools but will point out that at NC State, acceptance rates are variable depending on which major your are applying to. Unlike many schools, UNC-CH for one, where all freshman basically start out on even footing and don't declare at major until end of sophomore year, NCSU has you apply directly to your major.

If you apply to the college of engineering than you are accepted/denied based on that college. Everyone knows that the college of engineering and the school of design are the hardest to gain acceptance to. So while the university as a whole may have a high acceptance rate, those two colleges acceptance rate is much lower. You won't find any low 500's in the COE. Forestry on the other hand is a small college in less demand, so their acceptance rate is higher.

PackMom- I agree I know an applicant with 700+ on the math SAT also good verbal score from an excellent high school that was accepted to NC State but not to the specific program- arch.

Yes, S has a very good friend who came from Iowa to major in landscape architecture at NCSU. This kid is really talented and S says he practically lives in the design building. It is a demanding major. The School of Design is probably the most difficult to get in at NCSU. They take a pretty small number as freshmen each year.

My- D plans on english with education?. The practical side of me is beginning to like a school that offers plenty of options. I worry about the pure liberal arts degree.
