Hi all,
I took the sat reasoning test and got a 710 in math, and then I got an 800 on the math 2 subject test. Now I’m wondering whether I should retake the reasoning test. I’m happy with my CR and Writing scores so it would only be to improve my math score, which I’m sure I can, but I’d rather not have to sit through another one of those 4 hour exams. My question is whether colleges will look down upon my 710 knowing that I got 800 on math 2. Are each of the scores considered separately and will colleges treat me as if I’d gotten an 800 on SAT I math? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I don’t really think there’s a huge difference between Math 2 and regular. Besides, a 710 is fine in math unless you’re going for something really top notch like engineering. How many times have you taken the SAT? If you’ve only taken it once or twice, it doesn’t really hurt to take it again later on but that’s a personal choice.
Scores are considered separately. Colleges won’t treat you like you got an 800 in Math I.
Thanks, I took it once a got a 2250 (800 CR, 710 M, 740 W), with 3 really dumb mistakes on the math section. As a senior I can only retake it once before applying ED to college, and I live in the southern hemisphere so the October and November dates conflict with IB exams. It would be great to have 2300+ superscore but IBs are probably more important and I already have to take USH and Spanish on one of the dates. So as long as colleges don’t get the impression that I’m not very great at math I’m fine with the 710.
BTW I’ll be applying to the top colleges but my planned major is economics.
I think the curve is much “friendlier” for SAT 2 Math 2. I think you can get 5 or 6 wrong and still get an 800. My daughter got a 720 on the math section of the SAT 1 in the fall and only got 2 wrong! She did end up retaking and got an 800 second time
Are you saying you can’t take the SAT again at all or that one of those dates is out because of IB exams? Your scores of course are excellent but if you really want to go to a school with < 10% acceptance it might help to take again especially if you think you can increase your score if MIT or the like are on your list (engineering). The other option for test date conflicts would be to take the ACT.
