SAT Reporting Question

My son took his SAT 1 and did really well in two subject areas but wants to bringup his CR by re-taking the test next fall when he is a senior. In the meantime he will take his SAT IIs this spring.

Question: If he sends his current SAT score and his SAT 2 scores to the colleges he is applying to, and then after that takes another SAT 1, do the colleges automatically get his second score?

He is wondering, if for some reason he does worse the second time around, and the colleges already have his previous scores, can he just not send the new score? Or do they get it anyway?

Or do most colleges superscore so it doesn't matter if some of it goes down?

It's possible not to send any score report for the SAT I retake to colleges, but then what's the point of taking the test? Your son could wait until after the SAT to send a score report, but your son will have wasted a lot of money for nothing.

I doubt that your son will do much worse the second time around. Most colleges look at the best scores for each section, so I don't think your son has anything to worry about.

You can choose either: 1) send scores for all tests (including repeats and subject tests); OR 2) do not send any scores at all. Note that if you choose (2), the cancellation has to be done by the end of the Wednesday following the test, i.e., before you even get the scores yourself. No refunds of course!

No, they don't automatically get the new score. They get all previous scores, but the scores are not automatically updated. So if, in your scenario, he takes the SAT I in January and the SAT IIs in May and sends the scores to Schools A, B, C and D, and then takes the SAT I in October, he will need to send those October scores again to A, B, C and D if he wants them to see the new scores.

He can decide not to send the October SAT I to anyone, and then no one need know he's ever taken it again.

Thanks Chevda. He got an 800 and a 770 in two sections, but he only got a 670 in Critical Reading. There is no sense in sending the tests scores again unless he pulls up the critical reading, since there isn't anywhere much to go but down on the others. Unfortunately, critical readinig is very important.

He took the test in March. Any advice on re-taking in June while it's still fresh, vs. October when he'll have more time to study?

I don't think his skills will really go down. It's not like, say, U.S. History where you have to know a lot of concepts. It's more like, do you know these words, and can you understand this passage? The skills don't really go away. I recommend that people take the SAT in spring of junior year and then, if they're not happy, to retake it in October.

I am confused about reporting as well (I am old so maybe I just don't know how to read the SAT website correctly)......

Are previous Subject Test scores automatically sent to the schools you list when you subsequently take the regular SAT test?

So SAT taken January
Subject tests taken May
SAT retake June

Do the schools you list for the June retake get all previous scores (SAT Jan and subject tests in May) plus new scores?

guitarist's mom,

Yes, the schools you list in June will receive all of the previous scores in addition to the June score.

The schools you list in either January or May though will not automatically receive the June scores unless you list them again.
