<p>I read somewhere that writing does not count as much as CR and Maths. Is this true?</p>
<p>I'm an international student(India). I'd like to know what my chances are of getting into the Ivies if I apply for need based FA; assuming the rest of my profile is very good.</p>
<p>I am an international student too, How did you get a score of 730 in CR, do you speak english at school? If I were you I would retake the SAT, but this is my opinion considering my profile.</p>

<p>I’m an international student (Romania) and I too expected more in Writing! I mean I almost filled the two pages of the essay, although I have to admit I did not finish the conclusion which, considering my writing style, might be a drawback.</p>
<p>Well, what you may have heard is that some schools don’t count the writing portion, not that it actually “counts less”. It’s important to check out the individual schools to see which look at the writing and which don’t. If they don’t look at writing, it’s as if the SAT was out of 1600 and you just use Math+CR, so that’s a 1490 in your case. Once again, depends on the school.</p>
<p>Just so you know, the writing is becoming more widely accepted as of late. At least that’s what I’ve noticed.</p>
<p>Edit: Also, as far as I know from the college visits I’ve done, all the Ivies are need-blind in terms of acceptance. Whether or not you apply for financial aid has no bearing whatsoever on your application, so don’t worry about that.</p>

Honestly, I have no idea. My SAT score was kind of a letdown for me so a lot of my confidence just disappeared. I know a lot more than SAT is to be considered when it comes to the Ivies, but I’m not that sure about my other “assets” (GPA, extracurricular activities) either anymore. I feel like I’m running out of time and I feel like I’m barely above average. And one has to be excellent to be accepted at the Ivies, right?
I don’t know about you but it seems my chances are rather small. One can only hope…</p>

<p>@carreshwell: Ah, really? That’s interesting. I know that Princeton, Harvard and Cornell are need-blind because I’ve visited, but I didn’t know there was a difference for international students. That’s very interesting. I suppose it’d be in the thread starter’s best interest to e-mail each school and verify.</p>

<p>I was EXPECTING TO GET IN THE 700s in math to my surprise i got a 630!!! Then my english is just pure ■■■■■■■■ 400s and writings is in the 400s. IDK what to do with my self I’m sooo upset IM GOING NUTZ. Any encouraging words of advice i mean im gonna take it again in October. THIS IS RIDICULOUS I CHECKED MATH GOT ONLY 3 WRONG WASNT IN 4 A SURPRISE.</p>

@Remote, do you know if 2190 is good enough for Ivies/Duke/and a few others? I really don’t have time to take it again, I’d rather take the SAT Subject Tests, in which I’m pretty sure I’ll do well…</p>

<p>You can look up the SAT scores statistics for the accepted students either on the college web site or common data set.</p>
<p>I looked up Yale and Princeton last year. I can’t remember the exect numbers but both Yale and Princeton middle 50 percent SAT scores for all 3 sections are from low 700 to high 700. So a score like 710, 720 is around the bottom 25% for those schools.</p>

<p>I agree completely with BusyMei. First figure out what kind of college you want to go to. Ivy is not a kind of college. Each one is very unique and selects different types of students. Do the research on a variety of schools. There are many websites than can help you including this one. Schools that are considered very competitive usually expect a rigorous curriculum, great grades (As and a few Bs), strong scores (700s), focused ECs and strong recs. Hope that helps.</p>

Will a good application essay offset that low writing score? Also, I’ve read that CR and Maths are more crucial…

<p>^ Your scores are good, but retake in October (I’m also taking it one last time in October) anyway, and the College essays is one of the most important factors. An excellent essay can help you get into a school as long as everything else is acceptable.</p>
