I took the SAT I in March and I was wondering if I should retake.

CR: 780
Math: 770
Writing: 800

So I got a 2350 and I know that's a really good score, but this is my first time taking the SAT and I was wondering if anyone knows the likelihood of scoring higher the second time aorund (because before I took it my counselor kept telling me that most kids take it more than once and their scores go up?).

I’m wondering this too (I had an identical score breakdown lol). But my score was the result of studying–not heavily, but nonetheless. I feel confident my CR score would go up, but I could just as easily miss a question or two again. Plus, SAT IIs need to be taken–eek!

I took a course at Testmasters, but I thought the SAT was pretty hard while taking it. I was super surprised with the results. I talked to my counselor, and I think I’m just gonna keep this score and not retake.

Your math+CR composite is only 1550…retake it if you think you can score higher. That is only 75% percentile (25% score higher) in some top schools like Harvard and Yale.

Seriously though. If you can’t appreciate a 2350 and need advice for a retake…get real. Your SAT at this point WON’T be the reason you get into HYPS or not. So rather than retaking the exam, your time will be much better used by building up your college application. If you want a 2400 go for it… no need to ask here, because you’ll get the same responses. “Go ahead if you want. If you feel like you can do better, retake.”

Realistically, maybe, since top schools practice holistic review, but theoretically it would help him because he’d be on par or slightly above the top 25% at schools like Harvard and MIT…also he may be concerned about his score dropping, in which case it would depend on the school and whether it super-scores or not…

BUT, I am going to say that you need to get your priorities straight first. If your ECs, GPA, and the like are not competitive enough for top schools, work on those first. Simple enough. If you are not applying to top schools, or otherwise reaches, there’s really no point in retaking it.

…raging user said the same thing for the “retake 2360” thread (the same exact thing)…

Anyways…take again only if you think you can get a better score, but why take it again if you’re going to get the same or lower b/c it costs $ and wastes time…so, your choice.

Here’s a fun anecdote for you: I sort of wanted to retake after my 2360 (which had quite the balanced breakdown) just because there was a girl at my school who’d gotten a perfect score, and I guess I needed to prove that I was just as good as her. So I took the SAT again, 800’d two sections, and still wound up with a score 30 points less. For missing two questions. Basically it was a gigantic waste of time!

Just know that once you reach the upper echelons of SAT scores, a lot of it is up to chance and somebody who pulled a 2400 one day could just as easily have scored quite a bit lower. Yeah, most kids’ scores go up. Most kids also don’t get 2300+ their first time.

I suppose if, like me, you actually enjoy taking the SAT in some perverse way (… I like standardized testing. I know, I’m a freak), you can try again just for kicks. But a 2350 is /quite/ good enough even for HYPSM. Don’t retake 'cos you think you have to.

concentrate on the other parts of your application. no one seriously gives a damn more bout that 2400 than your 2350. its a damn number, for god’s sake. improve your personality. dont waste your time on this. prudish geek.

So many baseless conjectures made on this thread lol. A 2350 is not a 2400 and those who claim that college adcoms see the scores as exactly the same should find some actual data before making such claims.
