SAT Retake?

This discussion was created from comments split from: SAT Retake? ACT? Relax?.

My son is in the same position of scoring a 1590 on the first try, but he only scored a 19/24 on the essay. Is that a concern for the top-tier schools? He doesn’t want to take the SAT again, but we considered trying the ACT to see if he could land a 36 with a higher essay score. Sorry to make a big deal about it, but you know how this goes. We’re all on here because we’re trying to cover all the bases to have a good shot at the best schools our kids want to attend. He has a couple of 800’s on SAT subject tests, so we’re thinking about running with the single SAT sitting even though the essay score is not at the top.

No

Don’t. The SAT score is excellent for all schools.

IMO, that’s the way to go. I was a one-and-done with a lower score and did well in the admissions process (not that an anecdote is data). As I’ve said many times here, top colleges routinely reject applicants with 4.0/36/1600 while accepting applicants with lower stats.

Your son’s time is better spent on his EC’s, polishing his essays, maintaining his GPA, etc. If a college rejects him with a 1590, I doubt they would have accepted him with a 1600.

I agree. Let that fine fine SAT score rest. No reason to appear to be obsessed about the score, especially because he already has excellent subject test scores. Sure, take the ACT if he wants to. But it would be better to focus on everything else – things that can’t be reduced to scores on tests.

Not sure wht the point of the post is…except to brag about a 1590 SAT score.

Does the OP REALLY think this is worthy of retaking the SAT? Really?

Does the OP really think that a 36 ACT will trump a 1590 SAT?

I agree with the last sentence…run with this SAT score…one and done. Don’t retake. The score could go DOWN.

I really appreciate the advice and comments. Not bragging because 1590 doesn’t pay the bills! It’s just a test score. My question was more about the essay score. That doesn’t get discussed much in these threads. I guess I was just looking for reassurance. My wife and I talk ourselves in circles about this stuff. Again, thanks for the help!
