SAT, SAT II, and other depressing stuff.

Okay, I don't know if I have a problem. I sure hope not! Please give me some advice before I lose total confidence in myself.

Here is my concern; I have taken the SAT II Math IIC test 3 times (610, 570, 630) in 9th, 10th, and 11th grades. I have studied hard for these exams and just seem to choke on test day. I don't know what to do to get a 700+. I am on the verge of losing confidence in anything I do. That's not all....here is a short history of my failures up until now...
SAT II-Biology-(610, 580) Chemistry-(590, 640) SAT I-(M-700, V-730) New SAT-(M-790,V-650, W-650)

The biggest question on my mind is...Will it look bad if I've taken a test (Math IIC) 4 times in order to get a 700+??!! I will apply ED this fall and plan to take SAT II Math IIC, Biology, and US History in October. This June, I will take the NEW SAT again.

I really appreciate any comments. Most of you are probably not facing the same situation.

if you're not majoring in a math-related field, i'd recommend not taking it again. focus on your other SATIIs and the SATI.

try not to overdo the tests too much. admissions officers like to see persistence, but taking a test too many times could raise a red flag.

feel free to email or PM me if you have any other questions.

Thanks Steve. Speaking of raising a red flag, will it raise a red flag if I've taken the Math IIC test 4 times? I thought that if I got 610,570,630,and then 700+ that this would show improvement. What do you think? How do my other stats look? I plan to major in biology.

My son took the MathIIC once-got a 610 (his lowest of the 3 SATII scores submitted-the other 2 were 720 Writing and World History 710-ge was accepted ED to Columbia.

Thanks for that information, Columbiamom! However, didn't your son get an edge in the admission decision because his parent (you) is an alumnus? None of my parents attended CC and even worse, I am Asian! If I was some other minority and had a parent alumnus, I would be on cruise control, right?

Nope- my son is a white male from Queens, NY, not an athlete, neither his dad nor I is an alumnus/a. I do think applying ED, while very still very, very selective, helped give his overall app a closer, nicer look-also he had an excellent interview...good luck to you-sounds like you have a good shot!

Ugh, I scored a 730 on the US history, and a 700 on biology; not really outstanding. Are these scores still competitive for Columbia?

if the rest of your package is great, then those scores are competitive and will not hurt you. while having high scores is great (i know we all push ourselves for 780+)...there's no need to worry about a 700 or 730 as long as your other stats and essay are good. if you need any help with the essay, contact me.

I agree with Colulmbiamom. Last year, my son applied ED with SAT 2's of 760 W, 720 M1C, 640 M2C, and 640 US His. White male from NJ, not athlete or legacy, was accepted. And--he applied as an astro major (though he's since changed his mind). I honestly think they don't over-emphasize the SAT 2's. Write a great essay--I think that was the key, along with a good alumni interview.

And columbiamom agrees with garlandmom! I will add, however, that my son put Political Science, Theatre Arts, and English as his 3 top majors, so they knew he clearly not going to be a Math major-also a 700 on the Math portion of SAT I, plus a 99 average in AP Calc, probably helped, but again, I think the College, as opposed to SEAS, outs much more emphasis on writing skills.....
