i don't know exactly, it is almost random. I think a 1300 should just about do it because I don't know anyone below a 1300 that is in either scholars or honors. You are highly qualified so I only say 1300 because it might be some sort of 'cut off'. I had a 1380 3.45/4.0W. Also i don't know exactly what will put you in honors or scholars. I have a friend with a 1460 and 4.4+W and got scholars while others have been in honors with a 1310 and the same is true with the opposite.

Like bigj, apply early. I don't think it matters whether you apply Nov. 30th or october 1st but you have to apply before the priority deadline of the Dec. 1st. After that you hurt your chances of getting in period and they won't automatically review you for programs.

i think maryland also cares about the essays...and the questions for ur "niche"? yeah..that's a big one i think..i really don't know. the SAT/GPA score seems pretty random..i guess overall if ur doing pretty well, u should be fine

Maybe there was something wrong with your paperwork?

I actualy had a 1270 and I got in Scholars. I think one thing that helped though was that I have a friend on campus and he's in scholars.. and they had this thing where people in scholars could inform the admissions office of people they knew applying who would most likely accept the offer to go to scholars. He put my name in so I'm sure that helped at least a little.

Well I hope my two cousins in scholars right now did that for me . I am not sure they did...

But yes, as wiskers said, I think the niche is extremely important. From what people have said people that have shown an interest and working towards a career get scholars and an internship shows that. honors seems almost science focused but that just might be an unrelated observation. I really don't care though, honors will be considered better by outside parties regardless because its a university honors and scholars will give opportunities for the kids to do stuff in their interest field. The important thing is not what youre doing but the fact that youre doing something. Even if someone wasn't invited to scholars or honors (and it does seem random) it doesn't really matter as long as they find other ways to become active.

Jaw, if you want scholars then maybe this could help. I know many people that are in scholars and less that are in honors. Nearly all the people in scholars have an internship but it is also true that a lot of people at my school have an internship in general so~. Seriously would say 30-40% of the seniors have some kind of internship and even more with actual jobs. I didn't have good freshman year grades, sadly for you schools put a lot less weight on those grades, umich doesn't even consider them. Your Junior year will be extremely important and you did a good job, the sophomore year's drop won't matter as much because you pulled your grades up and your cumulative grades for all three years is good. My junior year was my best. I was active in the music program and the performing arts at my school as well as being in a good number of clubs. I took summer college classes at a CC and take them during the year. I have an internship which like I said before is probably the best thing I have done. In the essays I clearly conveyed that I am interested in business, I don't just think I am because of movies or television but I have work towards getting experience in my internship. I explained how I wanted to see if I would like business and therefore took business classes in the community college and then took the internship. I wrote that while I did that I learned that I was really interested in business and I would like to continue it and was sure about my future.

I had a 1360 / 4.58 W and I got in. But I think the above posters are right in that Scholars picks people based on the essays and short answer questions more than stats...

Yeah I agree with Cheapseats.. I think major has something to do with it. 3 of my friends who I know got honors decalred something math or science related as their major. My other friend who's like really smart and got high 1400s on her SAT only got scholars but she decalred journalism as her major, and I declared psychology.

Yeah...Scholars/Honors has absolutely nothing to do with your major. About 25% of honors students are engineering majors (although engineering majors tend to be intelligent students anyway) and close to another 25% are business majors. [Here I go with my random Honors knowledge again...]

Jaw (and anyone else)-- it's great that so many people at cheapseats' school had internships or jobs in their desired career field. That said, NOBODY at my high school did. I definitely didn't and I'm in honors, and 4 of my friends from high school who go here and are in scholars also didn't. Internships just weren't something we did in my town. (I'm from Salisbury.) So don't let that worry you, it is most definitely not any sort of deciding factor for a program here!!
