Hey guys.
I had a question about the SAT..

I took the test and got a 2230 (710 M, 720 CR, 800 W)

I have recently been told (by admissions officers at college tours) at several colleges such as upenn, uchicago, johns hopkins that the writing score doesn't matter..
So then do my scores (math and reading) put me at a disadvantage for the application process? And does my writing score do anything to my advantage if it is not considered?

I honestly think that there is much more than 1 test score that goes into an application.. but it does seem pretty important

Thanks guys!
(ps im new so i don't know if this is the right place..)

Google “[university] common data set” and replace [university] with penn, uchi, jhu, or anywhere else to find out their policies on writing. JHU, as of the 2008 CDS, has no formal policy on the writing component. Penn/Chicago’s sets are much tougher to find but it’s a lot easier for other schools.

If they say writing isn’t considered, then it won’t have any impact on your admission. That being said, a strong writing score is great but it probably won’t help your app at those schools. Many other top schools consider writing and your score will be an asset there.

Thanks Anomaly!!

another question for u experts-

Also… is my score strong enough to apply to:
uchicago/columbia/cornell ?

Strong enough to apply: yes
Need to retake for a higher score: definitely

Your SAT would be good enough for you to get in if you ED to Columbia because your writing would be considered. idk about the rest of your stats but I think that with ED there you would have a great chance.

appreciate your response…
but have better things to do than retake standardized tests… I’ll stick to these :)… honestly, appreciate the advice though

on another note- … who cares about those 3 questions u got wrong that bring u from an 800 to a 710? If any college does reject based on that factor, I would be very happy not to go there…

Just fyi, fewer and fewer colleges are ignoring the writing score. Also, you might want to check up on your facts:

Upenn DOES look at SAT writing
[College Search - University of Pennsylvania - Penn - SAT®, AP®, CLEP®](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board)

Uchicago does NOT care about writing score.

Johns Hopkins requires ACT w/ writing, so I suspect they also look at SAT writing.

^ Yep, almost every college requires you to send either the ACT with Writing or SAT I score. Obviously, if they require you to take the optional writing of the ACT, then if you send in just the SAT, they will indeed consider the writing portion.

That’s totally your decision, but especially if these scores were from your first attempt, I would advise taking it again. It can’t hurt. :)

Hi im not here to answer your question but instead ask a question about my sat please reply
