SAT scores aren't everything... right:(

Yes, a chances thread. I'm considering many colleges that I seem to fit, as far as GPA, EC's and whatnot... but my SAT scores kill my otherwise good application.

What do you think:

GPA 4.123 weighted ,higher soon because I got all A's (and one dang B) during junior year
Rank: 23/280ish... again, may go up
SATs: :( best combined CR:680 Math:590 WR:650
Taking SAT's again and the ACT in october, to see if I can do any better, or if the ACT is easier for me.

AP/Honors:
9th- honors english, honors algebra 2, honors oceanology
10th- honors english, honors biology
11th- AP english, honors physics, honors spanish 4, honors spanish 5, honors anatomy and physiology
12th (prospective)- AP english, AP biology, honors psychology, honors precal, maybe AP calculus depending on how precal goes...

I did well in all of these classes, and I don't think I have any C's at all as a final grade.

Extras: lacrosse (9), student council member (11), creative writing club (11), national honors society (11, hopefully 12), rhode island honors society (12)

besides that, loads of volunteering:
thrift store benefiting a local church + charities- 420 hours
starting to volunteer in the emergency department of my local hospital, probably 100 hours before i send in the forms

paid summer internship at rhode island college analyzing small/large molecule interactions with DNA, with yearlong research, to end with a senior project demonstrating DNA melting curve analysis and molecular modeling

summer course at brown (summer @ brown) on medicine and society

For my essay, I plan to write about an experience that changed me. Synopsis: When I was in seventh grade, I found a private school site on the internet. I signed up for a viewbook, decided I wanted to go. Convinced my parents, did the interview/testing thing, got in for basically no cost to my parents (combo of financial aid/scholarship). It was a largely independent thing, since my parents had never prepped me for private schooling, and didn't even know I wanted to change schools. Going there for 2 years ultimately changed me a lot.

Unless I change my mind and write about some things that happen this summer (internship, or going to brown), the essay topic is final, since I think it shows i'm independent and determined to succeed, even when i was a little kid.

I'm worried about my unweighted GPA, because I don't know it, but I do know it's a huge difference in comparison to the weighted. Extra point per AP/honors class makes a difference when you've taken 15 of em.

Applying to URI, UConn (EA, combined BS/MD program), SUNY Stony Brook (either WISE or scholars program) definitely.

But could I even possibly dream of getting into Cornell CALS/Human Ecology?

If it helps, I want to be a doctor, but the major varies with the college. I have a different prospective one for each college. Anything I could do to boost my chances, I would do. BUT... I can't apply ED. I need financial aid, and would basically cry forever if I got in, and couldn't go due to money matters.

oops... that's pretty huge. sorry:)at least there won't be many questions as to my stat's. hehe.

I have the same problem as you. My application is pretty great if you take out my SAT scores. I'm taking them again in Oct as well.

Anyway, you really need to bring up that math score. The others you could probably get away with, but since your major is science related, you'd need at least around a 700 in math. I'd say if you got that SAT score up, or if you took the ACT and got a 31+. you'd be in a lot better shape.

yeah, it needs to be higher, math is the only reason i'm retaking them really. i'm taking the ACT because there's less math. and science. which is good

boop boop boop. c'mon people. i really do need your help, because i don't want to waste my time being sad when i get rejected places.

Definately take the ACTs this coming fall. My SAT scores were extremely low (1780) but i did better on the ACTs (31) so there can be a large variation between the two tests. If you are concerned about the math, I got a book by the Princton Review called the Crash Course. This book largely focuses on math questions that were practically identical to the actual test and wlks through how to solve them quickly.

take a look at The National Center for Fair & Open Testing | FairTest for a list of schools that dont require the SAT

hopefully i'll do well on the act then. the essay seems like it could be easier, since you don't have to make up elaborate examples. you could just use the prompt more or less.

IMO take the ACT in September and study all summer, and also take the SAT in November and study all summer.

That's what I'm doing, and we have similar scores (mine is 620 CR 610 M).
