SAT scores competitive enough???

SAT score (JUNIOR year)

710-CR
730-M
790-W
(10 on essay)

total: 2230

I was aiming for 2200+ because i heard that was all you really needed for competitive schools. but i thought my MATH would be way higher because that's my strongest subject! i had NO idea my writing score would be that high. I only have 1440/1600 though!
(i took it sophomore year and got 580-W, 590-CR, 710-M..didnt improve much on math)

I'm asian though so it looks pretty bad to get a low math score right? but i am from Arkansas. haha

SAT IIs (sophomore year)

math II-760
US history-800

I'm retaking Math II in january, then Chemistry in June. Pretty confident about those scores.

Is that competitive enough for Yale??? (#1 choice school)
Or should I retake and aim for a higher CR and Math score because I definitely have a lot of time to prepare for those? But that would be my 3rd time taking it..

And my GPA is one of the highest in the school, if not number one. (school doesnt rank though)

That's more than enough to be competitive.

Your scores are fine. Why in the world are you retaking a 760 Math2??

My math/CR scores combined is only 1440/1600 though..

A 760 in Math II is 79% percentile! I thought it was good until i saw that. Plus, I didn't review for the Math II so if I actually study for it, it'll probably go up. It's one of my strongest subjects and since my SAT 1 score for math isn't very high, I want to prove I'm actually good at math.

clearly, you want to retake, so go for it.

I know several people at my school who retook 790s in Math II. I call them "Asian". (Haha, not to be racist, most of my friends are Asian, just saying...)

It just takes up time to prepare for it. If i retake it, I would want to make sure I would get a higher score. Especially since it'll be my 3rd time if I do.

If it's competitive enough for schools like Yale, then I definitely won't retake it and focus on SAT IIs/GPA instead.

Retook a 790?? Wow.
If I got a 780+ I would be a lot more satisfied. It's just the 79% percentile that bugs me! Otherwise a 760 seems like a pretty decent score to me.

I'm more worried about my SAT 1 Math and CR though. It says I'm at 96% percentile which seems good. But a 730 and a 710 doesn't seem like such great scores for Yale. My combined score only seems good because my Writing score pushed it up...

I would not retake a 760 math II. It's already a good score, despite the percentile, and almost every info session i've been to said retaking tests an inordinate and unnecessary amount of times just makes it seem as though you are obsessed with scores/grades -not an attractive quality for a candidate. I might retake your SAT I however. 1460 is great - don't get me wrong - but i don't think it will impress the adcom.

It'll only be my second time. But I agree, I was worried about that.
I just thought since my SAT 1 math score is pretty low, might as well do good on Math II to prove I can do harder math without taking the whole SAT again.

It's actually only a 1440/1600 haha. I didn't think so either but will 3 times be too many..? That might also look bad?

Your SAT1 score is not low. Your scores are competitive.

your scores are fine.. once you break a certain point in scores, there's really no difference.. the Ivy's could care less if you had a 2200 or a 2400... if the person with a 2200 did something extraordinary and the guy with the 2400 is nothing special besides his scores, the guy with the 2200 looks much better for admissions

Hmm I might reconsidered it then.

I was just afraid that since I didn't do anything really amazing like discovering the cure for cancer, a not so high SAT could be the reason they reject me.

I think your scores are competitive, especially on the SAT I. On that one, one or two questions can bring you down significantly (I had 770 on math, but it was only one wrong, no skipped). As for the mathII, I think 760 is competitive enough. Remember that your grade in math is more important. Anyone could have easily gotten 800 once and 760 another time. Don't worry about it. You have great scores. Focus on your grades (MOST IMPORTANT!!!!), essays, and extracurriculars. You aren't going to be rejected because Joe Shmo got 10 or 20 points more than you on a certain SAT section.

I missed 3 questions. I can definitely improve that easily. But my low CR score also bothers me. It's just barely over 700!! And I missed 4 sentence completions (usually do not miss that much!) and only 3 over the passages (my worst part--usually miss 7)

I'm not that worried about my grades. ANd if I prepare for the SAT, it'll be over the summer so it really doesnt get in the way of school and ECs since I have so much time..I'll even have time to get started on essays early if I want. This time I only studied SAT a little bit every day. (like 2 hours?) towards the end of summer.

I improved my score by 350 points from last time. If I study this summer, I should be able to increase it 100 points or so since I didn't concentrate very well last summer (didn't take it very seriously..college seemed so far away).
YALE is just SO competitive! And coming from a small school and a small town..there's not much I can do for ECs or major awards..etc. Would I seem grade obsessed if I took it a 3rd time?

Honestly, I would leave it be if I were you. You're putting more emphasis on the SAT's than they deserve. Even though you might not have too many opportunities for EC's, do something that will make you stand out, but that you also love and enjoy. That will probably weigh more than increasing your score.

Hmm ok.
I just hope it's not the reason I'm rejected if they're comparing me with someone who had around the same ECs and other factors but a higher SAT score..

SAT I's will not solely (unless you have 4725+ and not a boring person on both SAT's) be the basis of acceptance.

Two Words: Score Choice. Take advantage of it and make your already very good scores uber-amazing.

I'm still kind of confused about how Score Choice works.

If I take it again and I get higher scores on M and CR but not WR..then what do I do?
