SAT scores for provisional acceptance

Does anyone know what scores Clemson looks for to award provisional acceptance to students? My d would be very happy to do this but she is unsure what scores they look for (did not specify in the admissions info session) and what the risks might be if she sent them from her May SAT test and June ACT if they were too low. Would that hurt her chances for the regular applications?

We visited last week and this is her number 1 choice right now.

Any insight would be much appreciated!

Clemson’s admissions video says that Clemson typically offers provisional acceptance to students ranked in the top 10% of their high school class and those who score 1230 on the SAT Critical Reading and Math sections (ACT would be 28)

OK … thank you! I must have missed that! Clemson was beautiful last week … d really loved it. That football stadium must be amazing on game day!

Do you happen to know anything about the Graphic Communications major? D is possibly interested. (she is also looking at Virginia Tech’s Graphic Design program)

I do not know too much about the Graphic Communications major being an engineering major but I have heard that it is a pretty good major at Clemson. Sorry I can’t tell you much since I’m not in a field related to GC or know anyone in that major!

Here’s the major website: [Graphic Communications at Clemson University](http://graphics.clemson.edu/)
maybe you can find more information there

Son just got a letter. His reading and writing scores were unremarkable (600/550) but he maxed out the math. He is very stoked that at least one of the colleges on his list has already shown interest.

S just got a letter, OOS. He is so excited that he is wearing his Clemson shirt to school today. He scored 31 in the ACT, 1350 in the SAT. He is not in the top 10%. I thought that they only sent provisional acceptances to those that are only listed as top 10%, my son is a URM maybe that contributed to the case…

According to the CollegeBoard the Clemson 50% point SAT score for CR/M is 595/635, which adds to 1230 (if I did my math-in-public correctly). Clemson offering very early acceptance (before application) to students who score higher than that, especially if the criteria is combined with class rank in the top 10% (which is only student reported at this point, as the college has no HS transcript yet), is a (smart) marketing effort, since if those students accept then it raises that average - there’s no negatives to Clemson that I can see, unless they get more students than they can house, which has been a concern in recent years.

^exactly my thought. In addition, Clemson has stated that it wishes to move up in the US News rankings. Since SAT scores and class rank are criteria in the US News rankings, it is strategic to offer scholarships to people who can raise its SAT scores and class rank percentage.

Does anyone know how Clemson determines rank for scholarship purposes if the high school does not report? For example if the school indicates 10% of the class is recognized by national merit, would that be used? For that matter, is it better to let Clemson deduce ones rank rather than eliminate all doubt? Lol!

If you aren’t ranked in the top 10% but think your GPA is “top 10% worthy” or think that you have a good shot at receiving a scholarship, I would not let your high school report your class rank if that is an option (that was at my high school and I didn’t send my class rank).

Thanks Pierre! That’s what I was thinking. For all I know, my dd could be top 10% but we won’t know for sure.

Congrats to those already getting the letters!

D took the SAT on Saturday but she did not want to send her scores yet. I think she was afraid if they were not good enough for the provisional acceptance yet, it would hurt her chances during the regular application process. Anybody know if that is in fact the case?

Her SAT scores will be available May 20 … if she is happy with them can we have CollegeBoard send them at that point and still be eligible for the provisional acceptance?

I’m pretty sure you can, you probably just have to pay some additional fee that collegeboard charges

Class rank is important in the admissions process at Clemson… don’t ever exclude it from your application materials. That will look even worse for you.

^I disagree. I did not send my class rank to Clemson because I went to a school that had 10+ people accepted to Harvard and 20% of people attend ivy leagues or top tier schools. So even though my GPA was excellent, my class rank was in the bottom half of my high school.

So I would say this is that you should include your class rank unless in cases such as mine or if you are looking to land a scholarship where your class rank is not in the top 10% but you think you can get a scholarship with your GPA. In other words, where it is probably more advantageous to not include it. I refuse to believe that not adding a class rank to your application will look worse for you when they have other statistics to look at such as SAT scores and GPA. It’s important in Clemson’s admissions decision but there are cases where I think you have to consider not sending your class rank. Besides, I’ve heard of high schools that do not rank. What would they do for those high schools?

My D got a letter as well for provisional acceptance… 1230 SAT and top 10% of her class. She/we are really excited about this prospect and we will write a letter back stating her interest in the school. I would like to ask or hint at getting some scholarship money or OOS waivers to attend Clemson? Should I do this, or is it only considered once you are accepted for sure? Does anyone have any hints as to what she should put in the letter?

Honestly, I believe your D needs to have 1350+ on SAT and top 10% and she’ll get OOS tuition waiver. A letter will not impact this. Clemson superscores, so if she takes SAT twice, they’ll take the best of all sections. Clemson has not given additional scholarships to OOS waiver(prospective) students in the past two years, unless they’re an NSP.

That’s one reason why my son is going to Auburn. (full 4 yr. tuition, $4K travel stipend, $1,500 toward computer, plus $8,000 departmental scholarship. also outside corporate scholarship through NMSC) Son is top 2% of 700 students and 1500 SAT…

your daughter needs to have an SAT score of 1350 AND a class rank in the top 10% to have any chance of getting the scholarship money (or ACT of 31). I would work on getting her SAT score (get some SAT review books and practice, practice, practice!) and try to get to that 1350 score when she retakes in the fall (do it ASAP). Best of luck!

And yes like feedback stated, it is highly unlikely that you will get any scholarship money beyond the OOS waiver. You will likely be responsible for all of the in-state tuition and housing/board costs.

Are these provisional letters based soley on your SAT score? How would they know if you are top 10%. I understand OOS waiver they would have that documentation but if they are basing on SAT report would they have that info here.

My daughter got just under a 1230 and had her scores sent to Clemson when she took the March exam.

I think the provisional letters are mainly based on SAT scores but I could be wrong since I never went through the process. You have to apply to Clemson to qualify for scholarships (and most schools will have the class rank on the transcript).
