SAT scores (I'm in earnest please!)

I took my SAT's in January of this month. I am applying in November.
I already sent these scores (1920). Can anyone tell me when I should ideally take the SAT's next and will the colleges mind if i send the improved scores again?
I would be greatly obliged if you all could even advise me on the books that i should use to improve my score....(Please reply as fast as possible as Im in earnest)

Thankyou

My son took the ACT, not the SAT and he got a 31 combined. His math was a 36 and he feel down a bit on the english portion…he is a strong math/science student and he has a 98 unweighted average in school…weighted its around a 104. Even with these grades I don’t think he has much of a chance getting into UPenn. His EC’s are great along with hundreds of hours of volunteering at local hospitals including volunteering as a Autopsy Tech at the coroners office. He did take the SAT II’s and got a 780 in Bio, a 760 in both Math I and Math II. From what I have read on the CC board it looks like if you don’t have a near perfect SAT or ACT and the president of just about every club in your school, your chances of getting in seem to be low. Not trying to be a downer on this…I think you need to get tutoring one on one to get your SAT scores up…self study guides are tough to get through.

Take a look at the stat’s of the “likely” letter receipients on another thread and you will see what I am talking about. I know this is a small portion of the accepted students, but those stats are amazing! My son is a bit bummed over the whole process, but I guess who isn’t at this point, he thought that his unique experience at the coroners office and his high GPA might offset his low ACT, plus he is ranked #2 in his class of over 600 students. He was also wait listed at Brown…so I think you need to be in the 2200 - 2300 SAT range to be considered. Hope this helps.

Your SAT scores are a little bit low compared to the overall applicant pool. If possible, try to pull your scores up to around 2200 SAT or 33 ACT. Then you’ll have a better shot. However, I personally think Penn takes your essays and ECs into consideration very much. If your scores don’t up being stellar, try to write a kick-ass essay that basically sells your soul to the admissions office. Lol. You really want to pinpoint the reasons why Penn is your #1 choice in your “Why Penn” essay (every year the supplement essay is a little bit different, but it basically asks you why you want to go to Penn). Good luck! And for your info, I was admitted ED to M&T Class of 2015.

I disagree with RichNY. His son’s stats are more than enough to get into Penn…ED. Assuming he goes to a decent high school.

My stats were far lower, though I agree, 2200-2300 is ideal.

My advice is to take TestTakers SAT prep (it costs a couple thousand dollars, but I got a scholarship.) It improved my score by 300 points, and others have seen higher score improvements. Because they drill you nonstop the month before the test.

If you can’t access that, just take as many practice SATs as possible. Your library should have prep books.

Keep working at it, and if you apply ED and have a 96 unweighted, have a genuine passion for some subject, etc, whatever, you’ll be fine. If not, there are a lot of other amazing schools. Overall, do your best but don’t stress.

thnx evrybody

and there is SO much more that they look at too. Look at the ED decision thread, for example. quite a few people got a perfect SAT and were flat out rejected.

Penn really really values rigor of transcript (like all schools), letters of recomendation, essay, and personality traits. Yes, they want high achieving students with good SAT scores, but I received a 2030 SAT, 31 ACT, and 3.89 UW GPA. I applied ED and got accepted to CAS. Yes, Wharton might be tougher with respect to admissions, but if you are sincerely interested in Penn and are outstanding in other areas (ECs, l.o.r., etc), then you should be fine. With your current stats, you have a shot, especially ED, so make the package count! Raising your SAT scores would not hurt, though.

ok thnx . Im planning to take the SAT 1 again in October as i will have 2months to prepare then. Do you all think i shoudl wait till then?
