True. Stanford and Berkeley categorically state that they don’t accept January scores.

If my knowledge serves me right, all ivy-league schools accept Jan scores.

They might accept it but what if the application is read before the scores reach(appx end of feb) beats the purpose of writing the sat again??

Jun 2010 SAT:
CR - 680 M- 770 W - 720 (E-8) Total: 2170
Nov 2010 SAT:
CR - 610 M -800 W - 800 (E-12) Total: 2210

Superscore:
CR - 680 M- 800 W - 800 Total - 2280

I’m an Indian class of '15 applicant. Those are my scores. I know, as a superscore, that 2280, while not totally mindblowing, is a very good score. The problem is, obviously, my CR score.
Math and Writing are sections where you can study like crazy and do well. Critical Reading is all about luck and talent. No amount of word lists or practice seems to help. That 700 in CR will make my SAT score good by all means.

Question is - Is it worth a retake?

When will you retake? You can’t in Decemeber since the deadline for that has passed. But then there’s standy-by registration, so you can look into that. In case you decide on taking the Jan SAT, make sure that it doesn’t interfere with your pre-boards and other stuff.

I, for one, believe that you CAN increase your CR score with practice. I increased it by about 100 points in a month’s practice.

This particular thread was instrumental in helping me improve my score.

Well, I want to do well in my Pre Boards even though the marks aren’t going to be sent to check my own level of preparation and do one final proper prep before the boards. Plus I’m not doing much for the mock pre boards and I don’t want my teachers to be unhappy with me after they gave me such mindblowing predicted marks. And I like them a lot too. Also it must be forgotten that the admission offer can be rescinded if you do not score well in the Boards. To be doing SAT so near to the Boards would be utter foolishness IMO.

I’m not happy with my 790 in M2. I suppose it’s acceptable considering I took it without a Graphing Calculator (I used a Scientific) ? :

pixie, I respectfully disagree. You cannot study ALL DAY for board exams. You need breaks. I find SAT prep to be a perfect filler for those breaks. It’s all about time management. Of course my views might be biased since I’m taking the Jan SAT. But nonetheless, if you think you can manage your time well, no harm taking it.

I probably can and that’s probably what I’m going to end up doing come December. Seeing how much I’ve been neglecting school, I have no choice. You probably are better prepared than I am then!

My friends are pulling all nighters studying CBSE to top and I intend to bring up my performance to match theirs too. And I want no distractions then.

But for your sake, I hope you are able to manage your time well enough. Everyone has different methodologies and you and I might have different limits and methods.
We have different ideas for perfect breaks anyway. :p

^ oh yeah. we’ll just have to agree to disagree.

All the best for your pre-boards. I need to do well too, so I understand. Not doing well, bad for our ego. :P

Its just december !!! No need to panic abt boards right now … Even if u start in Jan u’ll get more than enough time.

They’re around 90 days away.
Take out 15 days for mock pre boards, and 15 days for pre boards during which we’ll get no proper in depth study done.
Leaves 60 days.
Take out 2 weeks (14 days) for mock pre board and pre board practicals.
Leaves 46 days.
Take out another week for Board Practicals. Leaves 34 days for proper prep.

Now take out a few days for Christmas, New year etc celebrations. Say 4 days.

Leaves 30 days to the Boards. A month.

If you are taking the Jan SAT, then indicate in your application that you are taking it (in the additional info section) and also state that you’ve already requested College Board to send the scores as soon as they come out. Many colleges accept the Jan SAT if you arrange before December 31st to have the scores sent as soon as available.

One more safety option is to print your SAT result page as soon as available, and have your counselor attest, scan and send it via email to colleges. Many colleges accept this too, so that they have something to work with till College Board’s official scores arrive.

Use Rush. That’s what I did.

But Rushing for all the colleges on your list(something you’ll probably havta do if you want your scores to reach in January itself) shall turn out to be expensive compared to a single one I did. It’s 39$ per college for rushing.

^and rush scores are not accepted by all colleges.

Either way, College Board knows how to make money.

Yes. Columbia categorically states that they do not want applicants to use RUSH.

What are rush scores anyway? :|

And boards really don’t matter at all other than the whole prestige thing.
I am a prestige who re hence I will study nevertheless:P

I could do that but im registered for december so those scores will make it in time hopefully…

Pre Boards help you prep for boards. One cannot expect to do it all in one month(Feb) unless one is esconie which bdw none of us are, so you guys better stop kidding yourself about how it’s going to be so easy to prep later. It’s a delusion, nothing else.

Jan SAT falls bang in the middle of my rehearsals. Not too ideal, no.
December registration deadlines are long gone too.
I’m only even slightly considering the Jan SAT because of my specific condition. My score is marred pathetically by the 680 in reading?
The adcoms will think I can write, solve math problems, and scratch my head when reading. Is it THAT necessary to retake my scores, or is a 680 fine?

^ I dunno man. It’s totally upto you. It’s best to try to stay above the middle 50%… and generally speaking, for most top colleges that’d be about 1500 (M + CR). But if you think your application is strong otherwise, you don’t necessarily have to take the SAT again. If however you feel that your profile is weak, then a solid SAT score can sort of help you. But again, don’t let SAT interfere with other important things, like as you said, rehearsals etc. SAT is only one of the many things that adcoms look into.

Pixie, you are getting worked up! Relax. :)

Ani, SAME reason. I need to do well because if I don’t, it’ll be a major setback for my ego.
