Is a 1400 still acceptable for a rising school like Vanderbilt? Will an 800 on writing compensate for a low math/verbal score?

I have a similar question. I have a 1490 (760 V, 730 M) and I know that is above Vandy averages but is it enough above the averages to somewhat make up for a GPA thats not great (3.84 W, 3.67 UW)?

i know a girl with <1300 who got in class of 2010. not a minority, and nothing else too special. no worries.

pasch, your gpa is fine. i got in with a 1520 (not much different than a 1490) and a 3.31 (well below your gpa).

good luck!

Thanks for the confidence booster. The only problem for me is that my public HS in New Jersey is ridiculously competitive and even though we don't rank the school does give out a class profile thing and it shows that 19% of the class is above 4.01 and another 27% are between 3.51 and 4.00. So if I am not in the top 20% of my class and maybe not even in the top 25%...

Does this work both ways? Is being in the top 4% with GPA UW 3.8 from a highly competitive public school enough for a person applying with a low 1400? How much does race play a factor at a school like Vandy? Are they really trying to improve their percentages of minorities that being a minority is a significant advantage?

I've heard that a great GPA can make up for a low SAT score (not that your 1400 is at all low, texas) but NOT the other way around. I think you are in much better shape than I am. Did you apply ED?

pasch - do you go to the pingry school?

No, but I did look it up out of curiosity. I go to a public school in Bergen County where grades are ridiculously inflated (last year's valedictorian had a 4.68) and 19% of the class is over 4.

The problem is that it is a regional school (3 middle schools feed into it) and the town I came from didn't have as good programs so I couldn't start out in the honors track for math, science, or english and had to work into them sophomore and junior year, missing out on the huge GPA weighting.

Pasch, I applied RD, I don't know how that will affect me. Eh, I still think a 1420 is average for Vandy, but maybe my extracurriculars will help. Good luck!!
