For the 2008 NMS program (PSAT in Oct 2006), are June 2006 and/or Nov 2006 going to be acceptable dates for the confirmation of the PSAT scores? NMSC website only has acceptable dates for 2007 program.

Also, whats the deal with the college choices. If you don't end up going to either.. ?

A lot of times college-affiliated National Merit scholarships only go to people who list X College as their first choice. I know Harvey Mudd does this.

I was told by a Rice admissions person that the best thing to do with NMS "college choices" is to remain undecided until you get all your decisions. I know it doesn't seem like you can do this, but there is actually a small window of time after decisions come out in which you can quickly switch to the school you actually plan to attend.

i don't get this whole thing with taking the SAT to confirm, on approved dates. I took it in october and i'm taking sats jan 27. is it okay as long as you list NM as a score recipient?

I've been looking through the website, and I can't find anything about "acceptable dates" for SAT, even for the 2007 program... could you possibly post a link? My instincts say that as long as you took it after the PSAT, it should count as "confirmation."

I believe it can be before you take the PSAT as well. As long as it's the new version of the SAT (the one with the writing test) administered since like, 2003, any SAT testing date should be ok. Not entirely sure on this, but I think so... Hope I helped! ^^

my dd took the oct 2006 psat and the dec 2006 sat. She scored 222 on the psat which should easily be a sf in texas since the highest cutoff ever was 217. She received a 2100 total sat in dec. For those who were sf and made nmf, would her sat confirm her psat or should she keep trying. When we added the lower limits on all three psat it equaled a 2100 on sat. Just don't know how strict they are. She has a 4.3 gpa/ and is the top student in her class. She also has attempted 10 college hours so far and has a 4.0 avg.

To the OP: I think it would be safe to assume that as long as you take the SAT on/before December 2007. If us 2007-ers were allowed to take the 2004 SAT, I think you should be fine with the 2006 one. You could call NMS and see, just to make sure, if you want.

Maributt: Are you a senior? Then you might be totally screwed...I would call the NMS people and see if you can arrange an exception.

Proudparentof4 - my daughter took the PSAT Oct. 2005 and scored a 230 (in Kansas). Her SAT score the following year was 2200. If you search through the forums on this site, I think there is one that tells of someone who called NMC and they said a score of 2000 and above (1300 combined CR + M) was adequate. We looked at our D's PSAT report sheet and verified that her SAT scores were within the "expected SAT" scores listed under each category (i.e. it says something like if your CR PSAT was 78 you would be expected to score 680-800 on the SAT CR). If she was within those expected ranges (which she was on everything), we thought she would be fine. Other parents have told me that that don't think the SAT score is looked at that closely by NMC. They think they look at school performance (grades and whether the student has been a discipline problem) much closer.

Thanks MidwestParent. Although overall she met the criteria, she was off in her categories. She scored 71 Reading, 80 Math, and 71 Writing. Her sat scores were 760 Reading, 680 Math, and 660 Writing, making her reading over and her math under. She wasn't paying attn to the time and didn't finish her sat math. She's afraid she won't make as high as 760 in reading. But with a 1440 cr/math and 2100 overall, it sounds like she's safe. Thanks again. Might be back asking you more questions next year about the process.
