I have yet to hear back from the UW, but am wondering how you would compare the importance of SAT scores and GPA. I scores a 2230 on the SAT (33 on the ACT), but a fairly low GPA, a 3.3 or so. I have a large upward trend (my last semester in junior year I had a 3.8) since freshman year, when my grades were pretty bad, but I'm wondering how the importance of these compares and how you think colleges will look at this.

Any of you out there have great test scores and bad grades? Other way around?

I was in a similar situation to you (high SAT, low GPA, upward grades trend). I’d say you don’t have much to worry about, especially if you were pulling off near-4.0 semesters towards the end of high school.

Not good to have such a great imbalance.
But should there be one, it’s better to have it the other way around.
GPA reflects students work over 4 years, while SAT is something you can easily study for…

I think it’s better if your SAT is much better than your GPA than the other way around. If you’re taking challenging classes or from a challenging school it shows that the grade inflation isn’t as bad as other places.

pumpkins: GPA may reflect work over several years, but standardized test scores represent the understanding of the basic concepts students are supposed to have picked up while working through high school. It is true you can practice for a sat or act, but everyone has that opportunity. If you need to spend a weekend refreshing your memory of what you learned in high school, it makes sense to do so before taking a standardized test.

Also, although gpa represents work in high school over several years, a strong gpa and a relatively poor sat/act could imply that the grades are inflated. I suppose that is why schools consider both, along with their knowledge of the school and use the rest of the student’s application to know a bit more about them.

If you look at my GPA and the courses that I’m taking I should be getting 1900+ on my SATs but some people are just bad at taking standardized exams like the SAT so, it kinda sucks and I’m one of those people

i agree with sweetgirl.
compared to the classes that i’m taking, my SAT scores are below what i should be getting.
i’m not very good with multiple choice type of a test. i do better with short answers or essays.

I got a 2010 on my SAT (1240/1600 though, 770 writing haha) but I have a 3.56 WGPA (3.3 UW). I could definitely have a higher grade but I tend to slack off a lot when it comes to homework =/
