Hey guys, I gave the Dec '11 SAT and scored a 2220 (710CR, 710M, 800W). However there's this nagging feeling thats urging me to try the May SAT's to push my score up to a hopeful near perfect score.
I do know that adcoms, after a certain level of score, treat em all the same but surely a 2400 looks better than a 2220?
What do you people think?

U have a nice score but a not so good score breakdown
CR+Maths must be 1500
Verbal + Maths is always a lot more important
2220 is a nice score but 1420 CR+ Maths does not look good.

@Mechrockz- I know that my score in Maths least can improve greatly as when I gave the SAT functions hadn’t been taught in school and I kind of winged it
Thanks!

Mech, since when did a particular section of the SAT become more important than the others? I’m seeing such an opinion after a long time, the last time being sometime around 2006, an year after CollegeBoard introduced the writing section.

2220 is an amazing score and the breakdown doesn’t matter at all. Expect for Carnegie Mellon, which considers only M+CR for undergraduate admissions.

I agree that 1420 CR+Math is not the best score, but who is ever going to look at it? Unless I am gravely mistaken, no one or two sections of the SAT are more important than the others.

Returning to your question xNorth22, the decision of re-taking the SAT is solely yours. Quoting from the CollegeBoard website, historically, students who retook the SAT the first time, gained on an average, 30 cumulative points. Historically, when students retook the SAT the second time, lost on an average, 10 cumulative points.

Some important questions to consider are:
Do you have the time?
Do you have the willpower?
Do you think you did your best during the Dec’11 test? If no, go ahead. If yes, deliberate a little longer.

Now, I didn’t quote the CollegeBoard statistics to dissuade you. I, myself improved tremendously. And sure, a 2400 looks better than a 2220. Do you have reason to believe you’ll score that much? ;)

@Tizil never heard about it since 2006!!!
google that -"is writing section as important as the other 2 sections " u will find a lot more discussions regarding this, not just one.

The only official statement of a top college I could come across, claiming to give minimum weightage to the SAT Writing section in the 2011 admissions cycle was from Johns Hopkins University, as follows:

The only posts or articles which claimed that SAT Writing doesn’t hold equal importance to Math and CR are from 2006, 2007 or 2008. That’s 6, 5 and 4 years ago respectively. 4 years ago, I was 14.

Furthermore, here’s another source, that classifies colleges on how they consider the SAT writing section: [New SAT Scoring Policies from 374 Top Schools](New SAT Scoring Policies from 374 Top Schools) A quick trip to the Internet Time Machine (yes, that’s a website :p) shows that this webpage hasn’t been edited since mid-2007. Most of the colleges I (presumably others as well) care about, are already in the “equal weight” section. 5 years ago, colleges that matter to us considered the SAT writing at par with Math and CR. Today, there might be even more.

I have a 2300 (800 CR, 790 M, 710 M). I am also contemplating a retake, coz a) somebody told me that my math is kinda low compared to the other two secs, and skewed scores are viewed unfavourably, b) I don’t have any APs to my credit, there are NO AP classes offered in my entire city and it’s too late to self study. So SAT and SAT2s are the only tests I can prove myself in. But i don’t want to retake coz a) I am going to opt for courses in the Humanities, so maybe math won’t matter much to colleges? b) Don’t have enough time, gotta take the SAT 2s, TOEFL in summer, write essays, build up my resume a little more … and of course, there’s 12 std. prep. c) I don’t want to go through it all again!!
Any comments/advice?

^^ IMO, any SAT score above 2100 is regarded as good by colleges and if u have a score above that range, then u can be sure that u will not be rejected bcoz of ur SATs.
I would say that u should focus on ur SAT2s.
I am already done with the tests( ACTs and SAT2s). :D

Don’t take it. Even with the relatively low math score, it’s still excellent. Plus if you’re applying for humanities, they won’t care all that much about the math section. You can always supplement it by doing well in the subject tests anyway.

@Idledevil 2300 is an amazing score, and since you are applying for humanities, your maths score will NOT be looked down upon!
Concentrate on your SAT 2’s instead :)
