SAT Scores

I got a 590 Verbal, 760 math, 550 Writing(10 on essay)(horrible on the other part). Will this be seen as a low or mid ranged sat. I am planning to take it again in the fall.

Those look like international scores. International competition has been pretty fierce with new international applicants acing the Verbal as well as the Math portions of standarized testing.

I'd say get it up (Verbal/Writing) as right now it is very wishy-washy what admissions will think of the discrepancy in your test scores.

If the English language is truly an obstacle, take the TOEFL.

Your verbal score is on the lower end and I believe how the writing score affects admissions has not yet been analyzed.

Writing score is analyzed just as importantly... actually... my sat scores were 710 for math, 630 for verbal, and 530 (10 on essay) . Our scores are pretty similar, and I'll be honest, my scores were low enough to get me rejected from CS, but good enough for IS.. As CMU told me when they looked over my score (which is just 30 points lower), my sat scores were on the low end...

edit: The reason why the writing section is analyzed, is because before the 3 part SATs came into play, applicants were required to take the writing SAT II...

I meant that they haven't analyzed how much the SAT writing score affects admissions yet.

Tooya, I'm also a CS reject and IS accept. My scores were 720 math, 750 verbal, 790 writing, so I don't think that having a high writing score will help that much.

Well for my own case, they actually called me and told me, the only thing stopping me from getting into cs was my sat score, which to them they considered below average. They said my essays were great, my gpa was a 3.9... the only hindering factor was my sat score.

Don't want to sound stupid but what's CS and IS? I want business and have a 640M 690V and 670 W but a 31 ACT. 3.9 W 3.5 W. Not to hijack your thread but whaddya think?

Early Decision will help you a lot but with the recent recognition I'd say it is a small reach for regular decision. A couple of years ago, Tepper would've been a match for you.

Can you retake the SATs? Getting above a 700+ on each part will probaby lock it for you.

but dont forget about your gpa and your essay... even your teacher's essays can play an important role. Those factors most definately are still important, but SAT I believe had the most weight. I honest to god think my essay and teacher's essays were what pushed me through the door... so don't treat them like small things. What other way will CMU identify us as individuals? SAT and gpa are there to prove we are intelligent and possibly hard working.... essays are there to show us for who we are. :)

And as AA had mentioned, going ED is important too! The difference between ED and RD is pretty big. When I had an interview with one of the admission officers, they told me applying early decision would give a 50% chance acceptance rate as oppose to applying regular decision which would net a 30% chance of acceptance.

@amazon
CS would be the major Computer Science, mostly hard coding.
IS would be the major Information Systems, which is technology based, but it entails other work besides coding.

CS would be part of SCS, the School of Computer Science. IS is a subsector of HSS, the Humanities and Social Sciences (I think thats the acronymn.)

And you aren't stupid, heck my major is IS and I hardly know haf of what it is. :-S But yah, your kinda hijacking a lil... just create a new thread mate..

The good news is that CMU openly lists admission statistics for each school on their web page. [I wish Cornell would do this; they seem to hold this information tighter than the plans for the Manhattan Project. ;) ]

eg, Tepper('04-'05) V:600-700 M:680-780 GPA:3.64

This page also defines the alphabet soup of CMU college names.

the only SAT scores i can find are from 2 years ago, the '04-'05 year. you think they have the SAT averages and the number of applicants applied/accepted for each college for this year's admission? i can't find these stats and was wondering if anyone knew where they were, or if Accepted Already or someone could help. thanks.

I don't understand how my sat scores can be so far apart form each other. I just looked up my SAT 2 scores today and I was completely baffled at my math score. I had a 780 in physics, 760 in U.S history and a 600 in Math level 1. I don't know how my math score can change so much.
