Will a sub-1550 SAT score hurt my chances of admission, if GPA, teacher recs, extracurriculars, etc. are solid?
My guess is you’d have to go quite a bit lower than 1550 to have substantially reduced chances.
See the website for acceptance rates by score. https://www.brown.edu/admission/undergraduate/facts Caveat, these stats are Old SAT. Still, I’d take it as an indication of where you stand.
Also check the Class of 2021 enrolled student stats in the 2017-18 Common Data Set, section C9 https://www.brown.edu/about/administration/institutional-research/sites/brown.edu.about.administration.institutional-research/files/uploads/CDS_2017-2018.pdf These are a mixture of Old and New, so there may be some accuracy concerns when it comes to splitting hairs at the very top of the score range.
Do check Brown’s website and news articles for the latest news on SAT scores for Class of 2022, over the summer and into the fall. Class of 2022 is the first group with virtually all New SAT scores.
thanks!
So like the acceptance rate for 700-740 is about 10% lower vs. 750-790. I’ve been told by college counseling at my school to focus on extracurriculars rather than wasting time on a retake. Would that be wise? @evergreen5
I agree with your high school. You could study for hours, have a small chance of raising your scores, and get an infinitesimal boost in your admissions chances. Or, you could contribute to your community, have a stronger resume that may also give you an infinitesimal boost for admissions but will help you get better internships/jobs down the road.
I really doubt that admissions officers look at an application and say, if only she’d scored 750 instead of 730 because then we’d accept her.
