SAT Scores

All right. I'm taking the SAT again in October. The first time I took it (March) I had a 610 in verbal, 630 in math, and 680 in writing. Then I took it again (June) and got my math up to a 720, writing up to a 710, but my verbal dropped to a 580. I know that the academy values math over verbal and doesn't really give a hoot about the writing. Since USNA takes the highest from each, my current scores would be a V 610, M 720, and WR 710 (2040). My goal in October is to reach 2100.

I haven't really done any preparation for the SATs except for the prep at my school, which wasn't really that intense or helpful. Would you suggest working on improving my math score since math is usually more important? Or should I focus more on verbal since it is so much lower? I know that working on the "all around" score is the most important thing, so therefore verbal would be the best thing to work on at the moment. The only problem is that I find it much easier to improve and study for the math and writing section than the verbal. The counselor at my school said to improve the verbal you should read more... but I honestly can't do more of that. All I do is read -- and not "teen" novels. :p

I'm very confused on what to do... And I get mixed opinions from all of my teachers, which hasn't been helping me. So I posted this to get advice on what to do based on USNA.

when you register you can ask for the scores sheet. this will give you your answers and the corrected ones. this allows you to see where you are deficient and correct for the next test. schedule the next one and take it as well. Register for the Nov3 and the Dec 1st test. take em all and the admissions people will take your highest scores.

I need to take SAT2s in November... I had the flu when I was registered to take them in May and, despite USNA not requiring SAT2s, the other colleges I am applying to require them.

I suppose I can sign up for the December ones though. :)

I kind of know where I'm deficient in the verbal... and that's the vocabulary. Other than that, the wrong answers are random in the writing and math.

^^^^^
You should consider taking the ACT. My daughter picked up an extra 250 points by taking the ACT. Her Verbal score improved from 570 on the SAT to a converted score of 760 on the ACT.

I second the ACT advice. Our son took each and always performed much better on the ACT. Just our experience, the experiences of others may vary. :)

You did very well on the SAT. You have nothing to worry about.

if anything, would work on vocabulary if you think that is your weakness, and try and get your verbal score up a bit....however, your scores, overall, look very respectable.

Taking the SAT-II's is very important for your backup plans, so perhaps if that is your next scheduled test date, concentrate on those for now. Keep up the reading- with a dictonary next to you- do take the time to look up words you do not know (try first to "figure them out" within the context of what you are reading, then check yourself in the dictonary). I will second that the best way to increase your vocabulary is through reading...... although reviewing the vocab lists in the back of the SAT practice books can help as well.

Best of luck! Sounds like you are doing a terrific job!

Your SAT score is fine. I would have been more confident about my admission status at this point when I was applying with your scores. Standardized test score wise, you have nothing to worry about. Finishing out senior year strong should be a top priority.

Well, I suppose I'll be signing up for the ACT too. :)

Thanks for all the comments and advice -- I appreciate everything.
