SAT Scores

It seems like everyone has amazing SAT scores (all above 700s)..
I'm just wondering if that has to do with the type of students on CC or if realistically Pomona only seeks those with great SAT scores AND extracurriculars.

My highest SAT score is 2060 (I'm not a great test taker) and I'm wondering if it's even pointless to apply.

thanks

Kawaeegirl – There is much more to an application than just scores. You haven’t given information about your grades and other involvements that any liberal arts college would want to consider.

That being said, because there are so many kids applying to Pomona, if your scores are really not super strong, then it may be a reach. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t apply, but if does mean you shouldn’t put all your eggs in that basket. Make sure that you are also applying to schools where your scores and grades are above the 50th percentile for the range of accepted students. You don’t want to spend too much time dreaming about a reach school and not focus on targets.

Good luck. Of course your scores are strong, it’s just that some colleges have gotten super-competitive.

On the one hand, Pomona’s SAT scores are pretty high - for the class of 2011, the 25th-75th percentile SAT scores were 690-770 for Critical Reading, 690-760 for Math, and 680-750 for Writing. http://www.pomona.edu/institutionalresearch/collegedata/CDS%200708_v2.htm</a></p>

On the other hand, 22-28% of the class had SATs less than 700 and 4-7% had less than 600. So they DO accept students with less-then-stellar SAT scores. Pomona tends to look carefully at the person, not just the SAT scores, so if you really want to go there, I’d encourage you to apply - you might just get lucky…

If you really love the school then of course it’s still worth applying.
My SAT scores weren’t the greatest either (similar to yours), but luckily Pomona looked into my EC’s, essays, interview, and recs as well.

Just as SarahsDad said, they really do look at the full person.

knr802, i dont mean to be rude, but what was your SAT score? (curious)

Not a problem- the first time was 2010 and the second was 2090
While most people here have those higher scores that the OP mentioned, I’ve certainly met a good deal of people on the other side as well. SAT’s are just part of the whole package.

Just want to reiterate everyone else’s advice. If Pomona truly appeals to you, then definitely apply. Otherwise, you’ll never know . . .

Good luck!

knr802, thats not a bad score at all. I wish I had that score actually lol.

Oh, I in no way mean to put the score down- Trust me, I was very happy with it too! I just meant in regards to the OP’s post that she certainly shouldn’t not apply just because of that!

Little point of clarification - none of the top schools look at your cumulative total. What they care about is the critical reading score and the math score. They don’t look very much at the writing score. The first two are the ones that are important.

Actually, Pomona is one of about 50 schools that gives “equal weight” to the SAT writing section, according to [this list](http://www.kaptest.com/Kaplan/Article/College/SAT/Learn-About-the-SAT/CO_sat_surveyresults.html;jsessionid=FCEWCVZ44TXKBLA3AQJXBM3MDUCBE2HC).

Sarah’s Dad - very interesting list. I stand corrected.
