Is there a disadvantage to submitting (one) October 9 Subject Test (other test and SAT already reported)? Does the entire application need to be submitted for an early "read?" Seems after reading some of the posts that the general thinking is the earlier the better to submit an athletic application. If one is applying ED is the regular ED October deadline for this test OK if the rest of the application is in?

kurz, I would think the early read could be made without the second SAT II. When you start talking with coaches about official visits, and start getting down to your final choices, you can always ask the coach this question. Do you already have two SAT IIs, but aren’t happy with one of the scores? You can always report the two scores early and ask if you need to take another one (with a higher score) to please admissions. I would think it depends on how strong the rest of your academic stats are, and how much the coach wants you.

I know one Ivy I visited said they require the SAT2s but don’t even necessarily use them in the calculating of the academic index. They use either the subject tests or repeat the SAT score, which ever one helps more (in your case, it would probably default to the latter).

^^^ Good to hear. We had heard the same thing from an ivy coach, so it is good to have it reconfirmed - and for us to remember too - thanks!

Interesting since the AI includes 3 subject test scores…plus the SAT CR and M…

One HYP coach specifically told us that our student needed 2 SAT2s and either SAT or ACT with writing

A question along these lines…Is the writing portion of the SAT I now considered as a subject test score? I am curious, because when my older son took the SAT I in 2003 he was required to take the subject test in writing for Villanova. Now there is no separate subject test in writing. My younger son did extremely well in the writing section. Just wondering if it counted anywhere.

^ I’m pretty sure the answer is no. IMO, SAT Writing obsoleted SAT II Writing, but doesn’t replace it.

OP

Updating here–
our student took the SAT2s in June
and several coaches kiddo is emailing specifically requested those scores to go with the package for July meetings with AdComs.

On the flip side-- If kiddo retakes the ACT (possibly—less than 50% chance)
then the coaches said the current ACT score was fine for a start and Sept would not be too late…
so I expect IF a student has stellar grades, and stellar SATs/ACTs without subject tests until Sept-- you’d be fine

and of course being a “hot, top” recruit will help

An update…my son was not thrilled with his two subject test scores and communicated this with the coach of the Ivy he visited. The coach told him not to worry; that although he has to submit the subject test scores they are not used in the AI calculation and he is fine with his current GPA and SAT I score.

Wow
That is very interesting because the ivies our student is talking with–absolutely wanted SAT2 scores, at least 2…
They also have ACT and SAT1

Here is the AI calculator–it requests 3

[Academic Index3 - College Confidential](http://www.collegeconfidential.com/academic_index3.htm)

Thankfully the SAT2 scores were very strong and helpful - it sounds like the AI is a pretty fluid thing…

any idea how they use ACT in place of SAT1s?

fogfog, Ivy admissions are not the same across the board. Some are much more stringent about making sure the athletes have the same academic stats as the average admit.

I don’t know the answer to your question about ACT/SAT conversion, but most schools (non-Ivy as well) have a table that looks something like this:

[ACT to SAT I Conversion Table](ivywest.com)

Thanks ^^

knew there was a link and couldn’t add it into my post quickly.

To clarify…of course he still has to submit the SAT II scores. They are not used in the AI calc, though (according to the coach). He figured out son’s AI based on SATI and GPA. Son’s HS counselor says much the same (and this is a school that sends many athletes to the Ivies).

From what Ive witnessed it looks like coaches are flexible in what they use in AI, seems like if it will help you, you could convince them to use it. But thats just a gut feeling, idk.

The AI debate is intriguing-

as a parent posted here on CC that a coach wrongly calculated the AI based on the transcript etc–and that the coaches AI DID NOT meet the AdComs AI requirements…
and that studnet was left scrambling…
I am not convinced by posts saying it can all be fanagled differently for athletes

I know of at least two ivies that very specifically let us know that AdCom makes the decisions and no athletes get breaks–so top marks, scores and SAT2s were required–and never has anyone talked about AI–
no coach ever discusses it–they only talk about the acceptable range–which matchges general admits.

^^Don’t have any great knowledge on how SAT scores can get moved around, etc. for the AI, but we have had at least 2 ivy coaches mention the AI - if not to our face, then in conversations with my daughter’s college counsellor. Although I do completely agree that the final decision is all up to admissions, the AI does seem to be an ever-present factor in the coaches presentation to admissions.

“no coach ever discusses it–they only talk about the acceptable range–which matchges general admits.”

Thats false, Ivy league coaches talk to me about academic index all the time, and use the words “academic index”. Only D3s aren’t allowed to talk about it that bluntly.

^^Yup. The coach at the Ivy we visited gave a specific AI range my son shoud shoot for.

Interesting

one ivy in particular gave us a very helpful recruiting info package which included things like

necessary stats for the sport
SAT1 over 2100
or
ACT over 30
SAT2s over 700
etc

that kind of thing…

Every coach has asked for 2 SAT2s
