This is to any current Duke students or someone who has a vast knowledge of the Duke application process. I know that Duke only requires 2 SAT II's if you submit your SAT, but I am only submitting my ACT so I won't be required to send any SAT II's, but I am still going to send them because it will prob hurt me if I dont. I got a 700 on USHistory and a 640 on Chem, so I will prob send the 700 and then my counselor told me to take either Math 1 or Math 2 in the fall(I am stronger in maths & sciences) so I was wondering does Duke prefer Math 1 or Math 2 or does it not really matter? I am also unsure of whether to take Math 1 or Math 2; I am currently in Pre-Calculus and I am taking Calculus BC next year(Senior year). Thanks to any responses in advance

It doesn’t matter. Take a practice test and see how you do. Math I seemed easier for me, but math II had a much nicer scale, but it was really hard. Take Both?

Patriotsfan1 basically covered it. Math I is basically SAT I math but with a harsher curve. If you are good at math, the test is a breeze but missing one question will knock you 20-30 points. Math II is much harder than Math I but the curve is really good (miss 7-8/50 and you can still get an 800). Neither is really too bad (I personally thought that the Math I was a joke).

I agree with the users above. But to add, I’m unhooked and got in with scores of 600 (Bio) and 710 (Li)…so even if the math doesn’t work out as planned, your present scores are not bad.

I think I can give a little insight…I just took the Math 2 subject test today. So, I am in AP Calc now, I would HIGHLY advise taking Math 2 after Pre Calc, as there is NO calc on the test and you just end up forgetting crap like Law of Cos and other Trig stuff. I would say that you should definitely take Math 2. Math 1 is…ehhhh…if you know what I mean. Plus the curve, as mentioned above, is insanely harsh. I think that Duke would rather see Math 2 as you are in high level math.

2>1
10char

yea Math 2 is sounding a little better than Math 1 haha. But I guess I will have to just brush up this summer on Pre Calc so I will be ready for the Math 2. Is it even possible to take both of them on the same day or is it just smarter to focus on one?

@lanayru What does 10Char mean?

@Canefreak: CC requires each post to be at least 10 characters long. the 10char is just a filler to bring a short post up to snuff.

Oh okay, Im still learning everything about CC haha

I took both on the same day I believe with physics in between, it was a horrible day haha

Yeah I took Math 2, Chemistry, and World History in one day. It wasn’t very fun haha.

If you cancel a test you have to cancel all of them, I believe. I know a great student at Duke now in grad school who regretted doing 2 in one day much less 3.
If you are truly a Trojan test taker, OK. If you are an ordinary smart person, be smart. Take one SATII at a time. Do the practice books. Aim for an 800. Research which tests have horrible curves or lack of success (US History SATII as I recall is not easy to score well on). Math Level 2 is expected in highly selective colleges and the advice here is correct…take it after PreCal and practice with the prep book. The curve will be entirely in your favor rather than rehashing SAT simpler math.

Don’t ever take these exams when you are tired or stretched too thin. There are still sittings in October and November and December. Use them to aim for your Most Competitive Score if you are applying to colleges that routinely turn down thousands of high scoring applicants. Knock them off one at a time when you are laser focused.
