SAT Subject Test Scores for Stanford/UCBerkeley

Math II — 800
Chemistry — 750 (this is the one I’m concerned about)

What’s the likelihood I can get in w/ these scores? I have a decent GPA and have taken AP tests for math, science, history, and English courses (waiting for some of these to come in).

Junior
Physics C (Mech): waiting
Physics C (E+M): waiting
Calculus BC: waiting
United States History: waiting
English Lang. and Comp.: waiting
Computer Science: waiting

Sophomore
Chemistry: 5
Statistics: 5
Psychology: 5

Freshman
Chinese Lang. and Culture: 4 (I think >60% of the test takers were native speakers that year, and I am not a native speaker)
World History: 4

Those scores are perfectly fine. Even to top colleges like Stanford, anything 750+ is pretty acceptable, so you shouldn’t worry so much about standardized testing. Focus on EC’s and essays.

Also, I think >60% of Chinese test takers are native speakers any year. Don’t worry about that 4. Out of curiosity, how could you have gotten a 4 on that exam, being a freshman who is not a native speaker??

I studied at a Chinese school in my area for ~7 years before I was a freshman (started in 2nd grade), so I had a good foundation of Chinese language, just needed to learn more culturally specific things (the holidays, holiday traditions, myths/legends, etc.) and learn more advanced vocabulary for the exam.

Also, what do you mean by “ECs”?

For UCB, SAT 2 subject tests are recommended but not required. Your scores are competitive, but what about your SAT I scores? EC’s= Extra Curricular activities. UC GPA? https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/

EC’s, essays, SAT/ACT scores, GPA, and HS course rigor will be taken into account as a comprehensive review of your application. You need to be an overall competitive applicant for a solid chance at UCB.

In regards to Stanford, it is a Reach for every applicant and no way to chance you. Present the best application possible and hope for the best.

If you get a comparable SAT/ACT scores as you did your SAT subject tests, you’re absolutely fine for Berkeley.

Honestly, for Stanford just do the best you can, write the best application you can and hope for the best.

Those scores will not hurt you, but it takes a lot more to get into Stanford. You need to have a very strong GPA and superior SATs. Also, you have to have something unique. Best of luck and love thy safety school!

I have not taken the SAT, as most of the schools I have looked at do not require it. I would also like to add that test-taking fees are not very easy to come by, hence my not taking the SAT – I’m counting on scholarships and a decent salary out of college to pay off loans.

ACT Composite: 34
ACT Writing: 36

Also, GPA to date:
weighted: 4.56
unweighted: 3.96
(51 A’s, 2 B’s, plus a pass (pass/fail) from tutoring, with weight of 0)

Extracurricular Activities:

  • Science Olympiad (3 years)
  • Math Team (3 years)
  • Scholastic (Academic) Bowl (3 years)
  • Astronomy Club (3 years)
  • Chinese Club (one year)
  • Marching Band (one year)
  • Jazz Band (one year)

Also have played Clarinet in Band for 3 years of HS, and Orchestra for 2 years of HS (full orchestra so woodwinds are included).

I’m not expecting to get into Stanford as their admissions rate is one of the lowest in the country – I was just curious. However, I am planning to apply to these other schools as well:

University of Minnesota - Twin Cities
University of Wisconsin - Madison
University of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign
Northwestern University

You as an individual student cannot take out more than $27K/4 years worth of loans. The rest of the loans would have to be taken out by your parents and if you have difficulty with test fees, how will they be able to pay for many of these schools which may cost up to $60K/year if you are an OOS applicant with no guarantees for scholarships. Home State? What can you and your family afford?
