Are the necessary..or do they just help. Im thinking about taking the Math, Physics and the SPanish ones.

uva requires that you take math, writing, and a subject of your choice

UVA has updated their qualifications, as this is one of the first years that they are not requiring SAT IIs in admissions. This most likely is a result of the added writing section on the SAT. They still 'strongly recommend' that you take SAT IIs, but that's about it. IMO, (and as I've heard from other CC'ers) they will not sway your admissions one way or the other. If you are accepted, I believe that they are required for placement after that.

blackflag is right; in October I met with a member of the uva admissions board and an engineering prof. and they said they would only be a push, and not affect the decision if you don't take them (or they are bad). They also, to my surprise, told me of how little they actually care about SAT I's, which made me happy since mine aren't that great. With a good GPA, some EC's, a few honors, and great essays and rec's, you should get in.

Two of my friends were admitted early decision without taking the SAT II at all. I took 3 and it never hurts to have them, so go ahead if you can. We'll see if they matter that much come April 1 for me.

blackflag like the band? I got in ED without SAT IIs

yep, blackflag like the band. fortunately, not the pesticide.

A UVA admissions person has told me that SAT IIs are more important to them than the SATs.

"A UVA admissions person has told me that SAT IIs are more important to them than the SATs"

How does that make sense? UVA doesn't even require SAT2s...lol.

Perhaps as a state school, they do not feel that they should "require" SAT IIs as part of the minimal application. But they do say on the application form that "We also strongly recommend two SAT subject tests of your choice" and that "students interested in studying the sciences are encouraged to take a math and science test."

The sense that I had when hearing this comment was that aptitude tests are of interest but that achievement tests are better indicators of just that - acheivement - and , therefore, may be a better predictor of how much the student can be expected to achieve at the next level. (But that's partly my mind-reading.)

i love that band :)
if SAT IIs were more important than SATs than I would have been screwed. Unless UVA happens to know that I am some sort of supergenius that I never knew about (um...no...i'm not even sure i spelled the word genius correctly). I did NOT take the SAT IIs and I got in. Now, were my non-existent SAT II scores weighted more than my SATs then I would have to oblige myself to call up the admissions office and inform them of their mistake in accepting me. seriously, whoever told you that was exaggerating or something. they are required once you get in though ;)

The aptitude/ achievement thing is ideal, but it is just that: ideal. Sadly, few work on such a system and I would have to say UVA is pretty much among those who do not. That doesn't mean don't take the SAT IIs, they are probably quite beneficial, especially in the RD applicant pool.

Admissions officers don't really look at SAT II scores at all, and they're supposed to have no factor into your admission. Of course, it's possible that they may notice it on the side, but whoever told you that SAT IIs were more important are just BSing you.
