I feel fairly comfortable with my chances at getting into Chapel Hill, though as the application dates draw closer, I feel that perhaps I should take a few subject tests to make myself that much more competitive. I did very well with the APUSH and AP English tests, and I believe that perhaps I should take those subject tests as well, because I know that I will do the best on those. Is this a smart idea, to play to my strengths? Right now, subject tests are also standing in my way of applying to other colleges, including many that use the Common Application -- I realize that for Chapel Hill they are not a necessity, but what is the general opinion of them (besides the fact that they are another way for Collegeboard to make even MORE money off of us poor college hopefuls)?

Sat II is used for placement only in Math since AP and other scores are not in. However the highest class you can "place into" is Cal I. Even though you may exempt with credit that class. They may award credit for lit or english classes & possibly for. lang. On the advising page there are pages regarding exemptions and placement you should visit.

My son tested through the whole year of calculus with a 5 on the AP BC Calc exam. Maybe they have changed things since he was a freshman.

Thanks for the information -- What I am gathering is that Chapel Hill doesn't really care one way or the other the Subject Tests outside of the Math... which is fine with me. My AP scores are high enough to cover me in most subjects, so placement isn't really a concern... I just wasn't sure if Chapel Hill's response to the Subject Tests should be a motivating reason to pursue the SAT II. I may move part of this thread to some other part of the board, but I appreciate the responses, and if anybody else has anything to add, please do so.

Thanks

My post may have been misleading. My D exempted Cal I and Cal II and went directly to multivariable cal III with AP BC testing like Eadad's student. HOWEVER, she took SAT II Math II for math placement as requested by the registrar since AP tests are usually not available until late July.

It was frustrating as they put her into Cal I saying although her score was the highest in SAT II Math II, the Highest you can test into for "placement" with the SAT II is Cal I. My take is why bother. Lots of students had taken foreign lang SAT II but the AP or IB testing will do the same thing. My advice is take it as they as you to but don't fret over it or wait until one ofthe last sessions to register when your AP testing is in. No matter what don't worry about the schedule bc drop / add or prof. permission gen. cures all .

My daughter didn't take any SAT Subject tests because she was pretty sure she done well on the AP Cal exam. She didn't plan to take math the first semester anyway and as it turns out she will not need any more math for her major - I believe and hope, but she loves math.
